1983 defender 4 cyl eng and 5 speed trans assy

I was holding onto this unit to put into one of my projects but I am running out of time and finishing some others.. This engine came out of a 50k mile original truck that was an airfield runabout truck...absolutely perfect and ran like new..Personally I thought the customer was freakin crazy for paying me way too much to convert it over to fuel injected v8 and matching 5 speed... This engine and trans combo was absolutely brill as it was..I didn't even so much as clean it up...what you see is how i pulled it out...hows $2500 sound...I can even deliver it in south or central florida as I am usually running around in a pickup...coming over the the west coast of florida up to Tampa this weekend actually...remember...its ready to drop right in...I wouldn't even bother putting a clutch in it...its barely used..

Damn, sure wish this would have been available 5 months ago. Timing is everything.

Good luck with the sale.

83 is most likely a 2.25. Though, best way to tell is by the engine number.

According to my trusty Rovers North application guides for Rovers (let's face it...Rovers North knows a thing or two about the old ones..) all defenders from 1983 on were available with the 2.5 gas engine or the 2.5 diesel or the v8.. I believe this to be a 2.5 gasoline engine as it is different to the earlier 2.25 engine I also have laying around here from a much earlier truck.. and the carb bolted to the intake manifold leads me to believe its a gas engine also..;-))

That looks exactly like the engine I have in my 83, 110 I bet it even came out of a RHD truck. Its is a 2.25 petrol.

I'm no rover guru like dave, but Google says the 2.5 petrol came out in 85, right?

I just got off the phone with Les at Rovers north (I consider Les to be the guru of older land Rovers) and with the engine number decoded it is showing up as a 2.5 gas engine..17h is the prefix on the engine number... I don't have the vehicle it came out of here at the moment as it is at the paint shop but I may have been wrong on the 1983 bit...it may be a 85...but the engine is definitely a 2.5..
