WTB - Defender 110 CA Registered Preferably...

Hey Guys,

The last couple weeks I've been striking out it seems on a CA registered D110/D90, Automatic preferred since I live in SF but not a must and could be an older one with newer updates (just throwing out my wish list, but again not a must). I may also be interested in the right D90, depending on options, price, etc.

I'm heading down to SoCal later this month to view a 110 correctly registered in CA. but wanted to see if there are any others out there thinking about selling. I'm not looking for a perfect rig, but not a basket case either. Budget varies depending on build, almost pulled the trigger on a nice one in a neighboring state with little cosmetic work for $25K and looking at another one in CA. in the low 30's, but again depends on build, engine, options, etc. Looking to purchase one soon if it's the right one and don't want to deal with the hassle and nightmare stories I'm hearing about if the car isn't registered here in CA. PM me if you have anything, thanks in advance!

As long as you stay with a true NAS 110 (93) or NAS 90 (94-95-97) truck and the previous owner has not removed any of the evap. equipment you should be good to register in CA. All of them were built to CA emissions standards. I bought my truck in Utah and had no issues when i brought it in.

I'm happy to put you in touch with the seller of this one. I've bought from him in the past and trust his work and reputation.

This is an 85 110 from New Zealand (RHD) with a 3.5V8. This seller is keeps his builds original and does an amazing job. They are not frame off restos but clean solid and detailed in every manner IMO. Here's a pic of another one he did last year which now resides in Park City UT.

I'm not sure how the carburated 3.5 V8 will hold up with CA. emissions... I'm sure I can add a catalytic converter, potentially add smog equip. etc. sounds like a lot of work and still not sure with CA. guidelines that'll work. Has anyone tried to push through a carburated 3.5 V8 through Cali? Probably a dumb question but worth asking I suppose. Or how much it would be? If a full conversion is needed not sure I wanna go that route...

I agree a NAS is the most sure fit. Kinda pricey though.

Yes a carburated 3.5 will be trouble in California. I have an acquaintance who had plenty of hoops to jump through with his UK Spec, factory 1976 MGB-GT V-8. Ultimately he had to use a fuel injection system from a Discovery to get legal in CA.

I also read somewhere about a propane conversion kit, which should pass CA. Smog and is relatively inexpensive... Anyone know about this? Is it worth looking into? True?

My new 109 has a propane conversion and passed smog for the last owner last year. I will be smogging it this week. I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

Yeah I saw on a previous thread someone did the same conversion and was able to pass smog. Just wonder if it still needs to go through CARB and how do they feel about propane use over gas? I guess when you want one of these bad enough, you're willing to go through great measures. Thanks for the feedback guys!

I would not mess around and just get a NAS

California is only going to tighten the screws in the (near) future
