This seems like a deal waiting to go bad...

This guy wants to sell you a truck that you would have to import yourself. I emailed him and he says that some of his buddies did this same thing and it was no problem for them. Hmmmm....and if he's military why does it have Baden-Baden plates?

Bill-
Not 100% on the BB plates but he may be on the seams of the DoD as either a civilian or contractor, esp given his profile and the like:
https://plus.google.com/117184325802051835856/posts
http://www.yatedo.com/p/Tony+Crotwel...8300804f5c410f

BB plates aren't too far out of the norm depending on where he registered given that civ DE plates are the norm now I think to lower profiles there (all the more normal if he's not active duty or DoD civilian).

Almost this exact same quote was used in a recent for sale somewhere around here. Wasn't this truck though. Basically exact same wording though.

"It's nerve racking purchasing something over the internet, so we can do whatever it takes to make you comfortable:. . .skyping to show you the truck, show my government orders, whatever you need to feel safe and confident, believe me I know how scary it is. . .."

Makes sense. If I were DoD affiliated I'd target those areas for a little side business action. Not saying it is, or isn't, legit-just saying it's totally feasible. Not to mention dude man appears to have spent time in Tampastan too.

You're right to be suspicious of these guys who pop up out of nowhere with no history etc looks like the same guy here. Huge numbers of people are contractors or conntracted to the Military.

What got me was "I've done the research and have all the necessary documents to import ". How can this be if it hasn't cleared customs with EPA and DOT releases ?

We've been using local plates in Germany since 2006. While at Ramstein Air Base we were issued KL (Kaiserslautern) D plates instead of the older NATO plates.

The basic problem behind this ad is that it violates the first Craigslist "common sense rule":

DEAL LOCALLY WITH FOLKS YOU CAN MEET IN PERSON - follow this one rule and avoid 99% of scam attempts.

Craigslist affords none of the protections that ebay does. Craigslist says that 99% of transactions that do not involve dealing locally with folks you can meet in person are scams. I believe they're rounding down. I think the number is closer to 99.999999%. Regardless of what we can glean from the ad, even if the seller is actually the most honest man in the world, even if it is a real truck, the laws of probability almost guarantee that this will end badly for the buyer.

Lets be honest the process is painfully easy. Anyone that says it isn't is trying to sell you something.

So this guy may have sold a few trucks in the past or hasn't. EIther way its not a good looking truck. For that reason alone I wouldn't touch it.

Painfully easy......until there's a hiccup.
Believe me, I'm strongly independent and try to do everything myself, but there's something to be said for engaging somebody with experience. I almost did this myself before I had spent days trying to find a Customs Broker who actually had some familiarity with 25-year exemptions and the proper paperwork. Bring your container through the wrong port, use the wrong broker, shipping line or forget some small details and something painfully easy will become anything but easy.
Just saying, not everyone/anyone knows how to (or has the time to learn) all the ins-n-outs. If you have the time and want to gain some experience and don't mind making a few mistakes along the way, do it yourself and save the $1,500, but I didn't see the value in wasting days of my time figuring out the minutia. Plus, are you going to find somebody to share/split a 40' container? Or just pay extra for a 20' container? Or go RoRo and deal with all that BS?

Just as easy as walking into a casino and sitting down @ the $10k blackjack table. My point flew over your head apparently.
DOT would view this truck as "remanufactured" and impose current model year restrictions on it, ie no entry. Even if you put it in a container, the 20 inch alloys will show on the VACIS exam and most likely result in an intensive exam. I would expect problems (ie no entry)with importing this truck in the current environment.

Ok, I see what you mean. I was thinking a bit more general. That the idea that one can do research and have a plan without yet actually executing the entire process is reasonable. If you are well read on your "25 Year Rule" you shouldn't have a problem at port.

But I totally understand that he may, to the DOT, be treated as a Manufacturer.
