Reluctant "Feeler": Defender 130

SO...I'm PCSing from Italy a year early. This means that I either have to put the 130 in storage for a year + pay for shipping/import (and go w/o a truck for a year) OR try to sell her. This brings me to this post:

Listing my 1991 Defender 130, 200tdi, RHD, 156k miles, original chassis drivetrain and motor. 130 is my daily driver. When I rescured her from the UK last year she had (what I'm pretty sure) were the original shocks/springs, a leaking fuel tank, rusted out floor panels, and was in need of some servicing. I added 2" TF Heavy Duty shocks/springs, a new fuel tank replaced the foor panels and added B-Quiet insulation + and a rubber liner (intention is to put Exmoor Trim rubber flooring on top), new headlamps, new front military-style bumper, new side-view mirrors with XL arms + regular servicing. Truck drives like a champ and while I don't want to let here go, I also do not want to go a year w/o a rig. I think its a fair price as the truck would go for at least $40k in states, but given that buyer would have to wait a year to import + shipping etc, I think $35k is reasonable. My intention is to sell and have enough time to find a replacement truck out here (25yr old) before I PCS in Feb (don't think I'll be lucky enough to find a 130 though). A few pics attached, but I can add more upon request. (canopy and hoop set included, not the RTT)

Interior pics are from last year before I replaced the floor panels. I can add new ones this week.

If she doesn't sell it'll be fine as I'll just have Uncle Douglas bring her home when she's ripe

Oh, and if the buyer needed I'd drive the truck to a storage facility in the UK for ease of shipping.

three words for you my friend.....WAIT....KEEP IT!

We can always find something for you to drive for a year. This is like aging good scotch. Well worth the time invested for the final product. I realize the storage and shipping are not cheap.....but an investment in a "rare" type vehicle in the states.

I'm sure you guys are right. The post will not leave this forum, as I'm not super motivated, but wanted to put my feelers out.

You need to find someone who will look after it during your tour.
Chances are good you'll find a nice original Lhd Defender in Italy bring that back THEN sell the 130.

I will make you a deal on a lifted p38. It even has running boards so Carmie can get in.......

After talking to Uncle Douglas, I was very suprised how few 130s are registered in the states. I have "entertained" the idea of building/restoring one. Would be super nice.........

Matthew,
With the deal I found you for storage I agree you should hold on to her. As you know this is a rare truck anywhere in the world. An unmolested all original 130 that can be imported here just seems like a holy grail item @ this point. Getting a build date letter to know exactly what day its eligible for entry might be a good idea. Dates of first registration can often be misleading. FYI the truck would be worth more than $40k here.

Or better yet, sell the "new" rig in order to ship back the 130. I do love this truck.

Keep it and store it. If it's a financial decision you're trying to make, then make the right one and store it until you can ship it over.

Yeah. If transcar ships it the time it will take en route is like 3 months max. That leaves you 9 months to get thru. Are you doing any training enroute to your next assignment? After my PCS from the UK I didn't have my truck for almost 5 months before I could get to Dallas to pick it up. It was fine without it for that time. Waiting a year is no big deal. Plus think about how nice it will be to have a moved in home and everything unpacked before you start having to tinker on your Rover. That usually takes me almost an entire year to get established after each move.

No training or transition when I PCS. I've actually resigned from the government service, as I am pursing a personal business venture when I return stateside. It'd really just be way less stressful to return with a rig. We'll see how it goes. If she sells on here, at least it'll likely be to someone who appreciates her.

Maybe Cube from this forum would have a place to store it for you? He is in Italy

Yeah, Michele (CUBE II) and I are good pals. Its not so much the cost of storage, as it is arriving stateside without a truck. I may take heed and not sell, but I'll at least keep this post active for a week or so since I already posted. If she doesn't sell after that, I'll likely take the 'put 130 in storage, find another beater rig, and sell later to pay to ship 130 home in 2016' route.

Thanks Doug. I figured it'd be worth more than $40k, but didn't want to give the impression that I was trying to rip anyone off.

Thanks all for the advice.

It seems to me this is a no brainer. It's a clear sign for you to find another truck to bring home, and then sell before shipping this back. Might I suggest a 110 double cab for variety and a sure-sell?

Yeah I agree, keep it
Find storage and just wait.

Do they still have the radio station "eagle" playing from the base out there?

Yeah...but I rarely listen to it as there's no radion in the 130

Doug,

How do I go about getting a build date letter? Thanks.
