NY- 2004 Range Rover- $6250

I picked up a 2004 Range Rover as a project. It runs strong but I can't seem to get the coolant to stay bled. I put a new thermostat in it today . I'm afraid it might need a head gasket. This is more than I want to get into in the winter. It has a little lifter tap that comes and goes, but is getting better in the week I have been driving it. I put about 200 miles on it, but I can't trust it for the wife. Maybe it's my bleeding technique, but I've had enough of it.

It only has 66,000 miles. it's black with a few little dings here and there. Interior is amazing. Everything works. good tires. Rust Free.. California car. SUPER CLEAN underneath... looks almost new. New Hoses, new PCV hoses and separator.

It was Michael Douglas' ex-wife's.

any interest? I'd like to get $6250 out of it. At that I'm losing some.

I have All-Comms for it, too... makes it much less scarry to work on.

Thanks Dan,

This will make someone a good rig. Unfortunately, every year I seem to loose more more and more patience with working on the newer rovers.

I think if it came down to an engine swap you'd have to stick with the bmw 4.4 due to the front drive train arrangement. They are pretty cheap with warranty on e-bay.

I took off the brush bar, but I still have it.

I also have 2011 nav cds for all 50 states and canada, along with the shop manuals on disk.

I pulled the radiator last night, it sure seems like a flow issue.

I've been down this road with my 740i. I kept getting check coolant and overheating. I had a hose going to the radiator cap that was clogged.

I'm not a 100% sure on the RR but the bleeding procedure was very picky. I parked on a steep hill cold and started there. Took a few tries but I got it finally.

Regardless you've got it priced to sell. Hopefully it's an easy fix for you or the next owner.

I got more air when cold out of it last night, (tank level dropped over night), tank held vacuum from cooling
over night....

I think my next step would be to put pressure on the system and see if it holds. I'm a little leary to do this as I have a couple people coming to look at it and I rather not fill a cylinder with coolant... I've never seen a head gasket blow where compression only went to the water, but water didn't make it back into the oil or cylinder like my symptoms are. But thinking about it it could be possible do to the differences in pressure and air vs water.

I'm starting to think radiator expansion tank cap, but I only have a lower pressure one from a D2 to try right now... might be worth a shot.

With an IR temp gun, I don't see any temps any where that are higher than the thermostat. I get 190F out of the back of the engine going to the heater when the gauge spikes high.... might be a faulty temp sensor or gauge (not really a linear gauge I know). Stickler is that when it does spike the gauge the expansion cap sometimes burps... so something is going on.

On a positive note... the tap currently is all but gone. Could just be what valves are compressed when the engine stops sets it up to bleed down a sticky lifter or not. But this is DEFINATELY getting better to my ear. I'm running Rotella t6 with a shot of Rislone... per the advise of the BMW forums... and it looks like this may be the magic elixir.

My price is less than what I have into it... I'm pretty good when it comes to figuring stuff out, but I am on a time constraint and really just need to get my wife into something I can trust... maybe ***GASP*** a new 4Runner at this point. I can't wait another 18 years for Land Rover to replace the Defender.

Sounds like you might be almost done with this one even if you found a solution. But if you weren't I would suggest going to a dealership and talking to the best tech you can find about the problem. It might be a waste of time but you might find one that gives two shits and has seen 100's of these problems. The early 2's had these problems fairly often I understand. One story I've heard is use of improper coolant caused internal damage. Just a story I heard I have no idea if this makes complete sense.

I've also heard the only way to get a reliable bleed on this setup it to suck all the air out compressing the hoses flat and then fill... too much screwing around for me.

This is how the dealer does it.

Looking at what has bids on E-bay and what has sold, this thing should sell pretty easy. After I give it some time on here to give everyone who has shown interest a chance, that is probably where it is going. Should easily make more than my asking price, even with full disclosure. There is some high mileage junk saying AS IS with no description of mechanicals going for well over double my price that is selling.

But..., I rather see it go to someone that is in the rover community.
