Japanese Defender?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1997-...item2a11584352

This is the third 97 I have seen show up with extremely low miles (claimed) and only a partial US history. All of them originated in Florida. I wonder who is importing and changing them over?

Yes, it is.
But what about the issue of the odometer replacement given that the extremely low claimed mileage is a large factor in the price?

The one at Paul Miller was one of the others I mentioned. It was at Bernardsville VW, which has a relationship with Paul Miller.

I really like the Arles Blue SW Defenders. This one looks sharp. how many Defenders where imported to Japan? Do we know that number and how many have made there way here.

The one I looked at had the odometer replaced from Km to mph. It had an official piece of paper stating it. I think though the one I looked at came via canada. From what I understand some smart people figured out that these were cheap to buy in Japan so they imported them. I think one guy in florida did a bunch and a guy in canada did a bunch. I am actually surprised these aren't collectible in Japan given how it is such a small market and it seems they love collecting shit there. Well I should say I think that based on watches and ferraris. I think there are more F40s in Japan than anywhere and most watch companies make exclusive runs of watches just for that market.

For one, the steering wheel is on the wrong side for Japan which I think hurts value over there.

I agree but I am thinking being lhd would make it even more desirable form a collectible standpoint as it is rare.

Can you buy a new defender there?

The only two things about it that I don't like is that these 90's are being sold by dealers who are not disclosing the fact that the stated mileage is only what's on the current speed/odometer. I brought this up to the Service Manager where one was being sold and he more or less implied that it goes on all of the time. The other issue is what was the condition of the vehicle when it was imported? Maybe the Japanese D90 owners never drive them. Who knows?

I asked the seller about the odometer and not listing it as an imported D90. His sarcastic response asked me to tell him where the ad says it's NAS. He never gave a response on the odometer, or how he can justify calling this a 20+k mile D90 when the mileage is more than likely unknown.

Well I think most of these are low mileage trucks even with the change but people don't realize the differences. These trucks should be advertised as JAP spec NAS trucks. Personally I think the rarity of them over regular NAS trucks should drive the prices up.

I guess if a buyer has the money and just loves the truck, then all else is irrelevant. On the other hand if someone stretches their budget just to get a low mileage truck, then I think what these dealers are doing sucks.
Personally I like to know my vehicles history. With these imports that seems almost impossible to discover.

We sold that blue one about 3 1/2 years ago. It had 14k miles then and was pristine. We are not the ones importing them, but know the people that do. They get a new speedo once they come in and are set with the exact miles that corealate with the klicks on the original one. Not all of them are super low mileage cars, many coming in lately have 40-60k miles. The importers try to get the best low mileage ones they can find....for obvious reasons, but they are getting harder to find. also, they come form Japan or Dubai, not Saudi Arabia.

So why is the fact that these are Japanese spec trucks never mentioned in the listings? Does it have negative connotations?
When this odometer swap occurs, what or who insures that the swapper doesn't loose a few "klicks"? I notice that carfax does not record this event or the prior mileage. Who does?

Japanese/Dubai

I cannot speak for other dealers, but we like to diclose their history during the initial phone contact. This gives us an opportunity to explain what they are . They tend to be nice vehicles that have an unusual story. I don't think it is necessarily a good or bad story, but it is information that needs to be imparted.

------ Follow up post added June 18th, 2011 02:24 PM ------

As far as the speedo..the ones we have had have been changed by a local, long established, reputable, speedo shop. He gets both speedos and sets the new one accordingly. Only an idiot would commit Federal Wire Fraud over something like this. He would stand to lose his business, reputation, face jail time and pay a heavy penalty. The importer, not us, handles this, but I know the speedo shop he uses and they are good people.

With that said, we all know that speedo tampering happens. Not sure why, as the penalties far outweigh any possible gain. It is super easy to give a "haircut" to any NAS Defender, so you can also question their pedegree . Then...we have the well known 97 digital speedo failure issue as well.
