Importing a Defender 90 into USA

Hello, I'm new to this forum and have a few questions I hope someone can answer. I owned a 90 about 15 years ago but sold it because it wasn't really a good city car for my purposes (stupid move). I now live in a rural area (north Oregon coast) and am thinking about importing a pre-88/89 90 diesel into the country. I have a friend in the UK who has owned Defenders and is looking for just the right one at the right price. Questions: Parts availability? Problems with cars of that vintage, besides the obvious rust issues? Is the engine difficult to work on for a very competent mechanic/garage? Any other questions I should be asking?
Thanks. This is a great forum and I look forward to hearing and participating.
Peter

I really don't need the room and I like the proportions of the 90. I've always been drawn to small cars (A 90 is huge by my standards). LHD or RHD is fine with me. I take the rust thing very seriously as I live in the rainy Pacific NW. I've got an 83 Mercedes 240D that is mechanically very sound but starting to show the effects of the weather. I'll probably sell it to make way for the Defender. Our other cars are a new Mini and a Golf TDI so you can see what we like to keep around the house.

Can I ask why not get a 110? Heart set on the 90? A 110 would be just about the same difference with more room. Looking for left or right hand drive?
