Defender !989 110

A solid Land Rover Defender 110 County 1989, 19J Turbo Engine U.K Spec. This truck has had quite an extensive History. I bought it, while residing in the UK for three years. It was purchased locally in Suffolk County. I have all original UK documents spanning practically 15 years. Including the UK paperwork is the approved US Customs allowing the truck into the US. I was going to Title and register it but for family reasons and residing in California it needs to be sold. Okay, for a 25 year old Defender this truck pretty solid; not to mention. The truck has absolutley no rust on the frame. The driver side and passenger side footwells need work along with the 3 out the 4 doors need some metal work. This truck does need a little elbow grease but it's a solid truck to start going out on adventures or accomplishing a complete nut and bolt restoration. I'm asking $ 16,000 OBO. Thanks for looking !

We like pictures, I also must say I think the original importer needs to get it titled first.

I cannot register it since I'm resident of California. Anyone else in any State that doesn't follow California Crazy emission laws can title and register it.

Disco 200 TDI

The 200 TDI is included in the price. Needs a new Turbo and Head Gasket. Engine I had originally in it while in England then Swapped to the 19J for US custom purposes.

Currently it is black. Had to do a quick rattle can job before importing back to the states unfortunately for stock conformity reasons. It is located in Southern California.

Sorry, you have some more leg work to do. You should not advise anyone to buy this truck with your papers and expect title and registration to be straightforward. Rattle canning a truck to meet conformity makes zero sense. Respect the community here and provide more pics.

Okay... I've done the leg work and I do respect this community. I don't have 15 k to title and register it in California; therefore I don't have the money to do an LS engine swap that the CARB and Smog Officals would approve. I've been really wanting to do this project so I can title and register it in California. I have all certified US Customs forms legally binding this truck entering through Dallas, TX. I don't have the money to work on it anymore as much as it sucks to sell it, I have to.

Just understand that you, as the importer of record, must gain title prior to sale. If I were to buy this and go to the DMV they would likely turn me away as the paperwork is not in my name.

Not trying to be overly harsh here. Really just repeating what has been said a zillion times before. This saves you time and others as well.

Sounds like you've already had a ride or two in the Rover import abusement park. You probably don't need anymore disappointments. .

Can you get the title only in the People's Republic of Kalifornia without registration?

Here in VA you can get the title without registering the vehicle.

Clay, I think this is a state to state basis, my friend has registered 2 trucks without prior US registration with import docs in someone else's name.

How does spray painting it make it conform to anything? That's a new one to me.

I would think that it is possible to get titled in various states, even if California is not one of them. Legal import is legal import. As long as it was done right crossing the border in the first place.

It is a state to state thing. From my experience Arizona won't give a title without registering it too.

I know from experience that you CAN get a California title of a 80s rover in your name without registering it for road use. I had to do this as well. Take it to your nearest AAA or DMV and tell them you need to get the title in your name to sell it out of state. They will set it up as a non-op and send you in your way.

------ Follow up post added April 24th, 2016 10:10 AM ------

And this is why one should still investigate trucks when they say they are "California titled" ... Still doesn't mean that they can be registered for road use.
