Could you put a V8 in it & then get it registered?

Seems like it's part of your family!

Great site and entertaining way to sale it... Way better than the 'extremely rare defender just imported' approach.

I agree that really blows. Would it be possible to register het in another state and drive her on out if state tags for a period of time and then register her in California later?

Some guys have spoken about this on another thread; I guess CA is cracking down on this as well

Another problem there is that being resident in one place but registering a vehicle in another is not only likely to trigger insurance fraud investigation and potential denial of coverage but may also violate other laws in your state.

Why do they say a diesel has to meet CARB emissions?
I found this, which says you are smog exempt with a vehicle 1997 model year or older:
https://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/smogfaq.htm
So either your DMV reps are not up to speed, or you simply failed to inform them it wasn't gasoline powered.

OOps! Then I find this which contradicts the above. I like the line in there that says No motorcycle or diesel can be converted to California emissions standards.
https://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochure...cts/ffvr29.htm
Guess yer hosed. Get a Series truck.

Several comments:
1) great ad with great pictures.
2) why does CA insist upon being so ****y (the Gvmt, that is)? Malibu or Rancho SantaFe used to be on my bucket list of places to live when I earned some money. Now, not so much. Car culture is a very big part of CA culture. Even soccer moms care what they drive. Gvmt is destroying a very cool part of CA and I feel sorry for those in your predicament.
3) that is probably the cleanest, period correct Ninety I have seen in a while. Not since 1of40's mint 110 (sorry Barry) have I seen a cleaner early 90/110. Best of luck with the sale and I hope you're made whole on the money end.
4) sorry your dream was smashed. It was so close. Probably worse because you could actually touch it and drive it. It would have been much better if the dream remained a dream.
5) oh, and sorta unrelated, but thumbs up on the handmade quilt board bags/protectors with integrated shoulder strap.

Again, GLWS

not as a California resident. they are real strict with registering gray market cars here. no diesels are allowed and any gas car has to pass CARB/smog inspections equal to that of the corresponding year of manufacture.

from what i can tell the only way to register a grey market car in California is if you were moving to the state and you owned the car for over a year or if you were a California resident serving in the military and had the truck while you were deployed outside the state.

Time for someone to invent the "California Shuffle" to deal with this... Legal of course, yet something clever...

If my state pulled something as ridiculous as this with little to no warning I would drop the vehicle in an LLC organized in a more favorable state.
