Can people not have homes in two places and just register their vehicles in friendly states and live in CA?

Registration and insurance really are two different issues. Since I've been splitting my time between Houston and Chicago I had to look into this. I've had trucks registered in both states and insured separately. But found it easiest to just register both of my trucks in Texas, insure them together and just inform my insurance company of where the trucks will be stored and driven. As long as you're upfront with the insurance company, your insurance coverage should be valid. If it's not, they'll inform you.
If I lived in California, I'd start an LLC in another state!

technically they can. i see a lot of plates here in LA that are from Blaine County, ID for instance (AKA: "i own a vacation home in Sun Valley"). however, you would have to follow this requirement to stay legal:

Quote:
A vehicle must be registered in California if it is based in California or is primarily used on California highways (located or operated in this state for a greater amount of time than any other individual state during the registration period), even if registered to a nonresident owner (CVC §4000.4).
from what i've heard the CHP has been cracking down on this in recent years too.

Don't be a California hater, they are doing it for the children.
That's how this California politician passed so many anti gun laws.

So if you registered it out of state yet kept it in CA, how would the government keep tabs on how much time it spends in/out of the state? They going to stake out your house for a year and monitor how long the truck is there??
