Beater needed

Looks as though I'll be accepting a new job that will preclude taking public transportation. Will need a daily beater for a 5 mile commute. Anyone have anything cheap (couple of K$/interesting before I start stalking Craigslist?

Maybe he is an important business man and doesn't want to go to work sweating his guts out.

Nothing beats my beater! 93 Volvo 240 with a mere 134 on the clock. The paint is peeled off the hood roof and trunk, the hubcaps are all gone, the plastic trim drags on the road and it has been hit on both passenger doors by douche bags in the Grosvenor Metro parking deck who didn't leave so much as an I'm sorry note. Another ass wipe took out the right side tail light at Petsmart and knocked all the trim out of whack. Again, no note just broken plastic all over the place.
The wipers don't shut off unless you creatively wiggle the switch. The overdrive cuts in and out. I think I paid $600 for it six years ago. It has been the neighborhood loaner on many occasions.
I just did an oil change and tune up and put on a new timing belt. The AC is charged up and is cold and the heat is insane. Interior is nice. All the windows work. I only drive it to the Metro station and back. I guarantee nobody will f##k with it, it's just too off-putting.

There's a white BMW 500 wagon on Annapolis CL here. Also a Disco for 2800.
Gay white disco on DC CL. And a Jeep Wrangler.

Bill, good finds there, thanks -- the volvo sounds like the soft of thing I need.

Brad, cute post, but commuting kids to and from daycare and having to meet clients at the drop of a hat doesn't lend itself to biking to and from work.

Barry, thanks for the good lead, I'm in touch with the seller.

Thanks

I'm sure you've already found something, but Mom's going to be selling a '94 Saturn with 1??k miles on it in about a month, asking I think $1,000

I actually haven't found anything yet. Seen a lot of cars that developed severe mechanical issues between the ad being posted and me showing up (!), found a woman that, upon me pulling out her asking price in cash declined to ever sell the car, and have chased a lot of dead ends. I'm trying to work out a deal on an A6 avant now, we'll see if it pans out, but do send me the information on the car when she's read to sell.

Thanks

Interesting. I have a 1982 Audi 4000S with 1.7L engine (the "bigger" option for 82') that I'll sell for $600; quite possibly the perfect "5 mile" car commuter car, acquired by a very, very interesting story..!
She's certainly not pretty, but she "is" mechanically solid and everything electrical works. The original owner was an older lady who kept meticulous records of the car (journal entry for every road trip she made, to include distance, destination, and mpg!). My kinda lady. It comes with a collection of original books, maintenance manuals, and a spare key.
Best part of all is the car gets 40 mpg highway.
I considered keeping her until one of us died first, but I'm out of garage...! I live in California, MD (about an hour from you) if you'd like to take a look.

If it were a few year later 4000 s quattro I'd be on my way across the bridge to your place now! Let me see how this avant works out and I'll ping you. Regardless, neat car!

Based on experience, I recommend not getting anything other than a Toyota or a Honda as a beater.

I personally haven't had much luck with Audis or Volkswagens past 5 years or 70,000 miles, whichever comes first. I love 'em, but they don't seem to age well mechanically or electrically. Maybe the really early cars are better.

I have 140k on my 03' A4 Quattro and it still tears up the road. I've have had it since new and it seems to have the normal amount of repair issues as most cars. (just EXPENSIVE to fix!).
