Smile '72 Series III 88" Denver, CO

It's time to part ways.

Lovely Rita is for sale. She's my 1972 Land Rover Series III 88" North American Spec.
Rita's been my project for the past 4 years and has loads of new parts including a new Turner engineering engine with fewer than 1000 miles, wiring harness, fuel tank and tons of little bits to tie things together. Her frame is solid and she has a lot of years left in her.

Attached are some photos, but I've got more that I can send to anyone seriously (or semi-seriously) interested. Rita comes with a hardtop in good shape, full rear door, folding rear seats and the tailgate shown in the photos. I also have a couple of service manuals and some other misc. parts.

I've got ....wait for it.... over $12K in Rita over the past 4 years and honestly don't regret spending the money even though I know she'll probably sell for half that. It's been very fun and worth every penny, but I've decided that I just cannot justify owning a weekend toy any longer and I'd like to focus more energy on my other Rover, the '95 Classic.

I'll consider reasonable offers, but will set the price for now at $7,500. Of course everything is negotiable, so if you're really interested, contact me and we'll hash it out. Rita is not concours, but she's a fun old gal who needs a new home to love her. Oh and she prefers to roll topless...

I think you are selling her short. She is worth all of 7500 if not more assuming she looks as nice is person as the pics.

Thanks Ron, I'm just trying to get a fair price. I actually have her insured (full coverage) for $10K, but I've noticed a sharp decline in the market for these over the past couple of years.
Really she's only worth what someone will pay.

That is a bargain at $7,500. I think $10k is more appropriate. But you are right, it is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. This sounds like a good candidate for a raffle!

Good luck with the sale, I don't think you will have any trouble selling it.

She's beautiful! I like them a little older or I'd buy her in a heartbeat.

I really appreciate the nice comments, but I think maybe I should be clear that Rita is not a "finished" project. There are things that I would do if I were keeping her that her next owner will probably want to take care of, which is why I've priced her a bit low, but I think appropriately.

First I would replace the suspension with new parabolic springs and new shocks. The ride's a bit rough at higher speeds.
She also needs at least a new tailpipe if not entire exhaust.
Speedo cable is not hooked up and she needs wiper blades - I never drive her in the rain.
I've also never sorted out the horn or even tried using the heater, I'd be surprised if it worked.
She doesn't come with door tops or side mirrors.
I did think about an overdrive once, but that Turner engine with the 4-speed actually moves her along pretty well, much better than a "normal" series 4-cylinder for those of you who have driven one. She's actually very peppy, especially with the top off.

All that said, she doesn't need anything right now to enjoy her the way I do. I love just cruising around my neighborhood and into downtown for for ice cream runs or to enjoy the evening air.

Something I'd recommend is if any of you are out of state and are seriously interested, I'm sure there are local club members who would be happy to look Rita over for you. And I will do anything I can to make that easier.

Thanks,
Art

Very nice Rover! This looks like the one that was on the cover of the Rovers North catalogue a few months back.

That one was very nice, it had a Maine plate with QEI on it.

Just a thought, but I'm looking to buy a 2003 to 2006 VW GTI VR6 or 2003 GTI Anniversary edtion as a commuter and would be willing to use this Rover as a partial trade.
Just in case...

Regards,
Art

Art,

I am sorry to see her go. It is very tempting to fly out and pick her up and drive her back home. I just wish I had some extra cash right now. I would love Rita!

Thanks Russ, hope you're doing well.

I'd really like to get this sold. If someone out there is interested I'm willing to work with you on the price. Rita's not perfect but a great base to work from.

Kind Regards,
Art Vigil
