1997 NAS D90 soft top Beluga Black 86K

1997 Defender NAS soft top (Badger full and bikini) #1789 86K miles
$35,000

To start with, I am very type A and take the best care of my stuff. I feel good passing on this truck to its next owner better than it started with me. After 6+ years, I just need something new or different to peak my interest again. It runs perfect - 10 out of 10. The paint is nice and glossy but has a few scattered water stains - 7 out of 10. Interior has a few minor blemishes – 8 out of 10. This truck has ZERO rust.

If you are a perfectionist, with a full repaint and very minor body work on the hood and wings (est. $3,500), some new Exmoor covers for the seats ($250 including new foam which is not really needed), you now have a PERFECT 1997 NAS D90 soft top in my opinion.

So here is its story and timeline…

I purchased the truck in May 2006 from a guy in Tennessee, and it was running great but needed some minor cosmetic fix-ups. A fellow local D90 owner early on gave me some well-intended advice – “run some Sea Foam in your engine oil just to give it a good cleaning”. Well, the Sea Foam did a great job because it apparently cleaned all the crud off all of the seals and the engine began leaking.

I got tired of the leaks in the garage, so in May of 2008, I had a certified Land Rover mechanic, who does a good amount of the work on the Defenders in our area, pull the engine and replace all the gaskets and seals (including the rear main). At that time, he also replaced the rubber engine mounts, radiator, thermostat, water pump, hoses, spark plug wires, spark plugs, serpentine belt and transmission cooler line. A well-known local machine shop re-worked the cylinder heads at the same time too (no issues, just had them done while they were off). He told me at the time the engine block, cylinders and pistons “all looked ‘brand new’ and were in amazing shape for the engine’s age”. Basically, I just wanted to get everything dialed-in while the engine was out. It has run absolutely PERFECT since and still does to this day. I have only run synthetic engine oil since this work was done.

As far as the wear on all the above items, I bought the truck with 78K miles on it, so it has only been driven 8K miles in the last 6+ years. It has been babied and spent 95% of its last 6+ years sitting in a climate controlled garage.

Other new items on the truck most all done in the last 2 years & all in great shape (have most all the receipts):

1) Badger II FDS full soft top black Summer – purchased new from Badger
2) Badger black bikini top – purchased used on d-90.com but in great shape
3) BFG Mud Terrain KM2 Baja 255/85/16 full set of 5 July 2011 – sit tall and narrow like a D90 should, not fat and squatty – only 2,000 miles on these tires (like new)
4) TerraFirma Light Duty shocks and springs and RTC (return to center) steering stabilizer from Lucky 8 July 2011 – give about a 2 inch lift to truck (plus about 1” from the above tires). I have really loved this setup, especially the RTC stabilizer – oddly it seems to give a better turning ratio and is great offroad
5) I also have the original OEM D90 springs which are in very good shape (in case, you want the truck to sit back at original height)
6) OEM Land Rover Defender Steering wheel and bumper with the nice perforated leather wrap (no typical old dry rotted D90 steering wheel here)
7) Tuffy speaker/storage boxes installed w/ all stainless hardware and custom install of waterproof 12V plugs in the back of both boxes that have easy access from tailgate/tub
8) Rhinoliner on entire inside – I have since heard the concerns of people doing this to hide rust and wish I had taken pictures before. I personally removed everything from the truck (seats, rollcage, console, etc.), and my wife took one picture with me and my kids in the back of the truck one day while I was working. I can 100% guarantee there was not once single even tiny spot of rust anywhere on my truck. I just did it because my friend Brian Tate had done it on his D90, and it looked good, reduced vibration/sound in my opinion, and cleaned up easy.
9) New heavy duty alternator from Will Tillery
10) Memphis Audio M-class water resistant front separate speakers and rear speakers mounted in Tuffy boxes
11) Dual CD/iPod/iPhone marine waterproof stereo headunit with 1000W marine amplifier also. iPod/Phone plug in the center console storage box along with a custom installed waterproof 12V plug in the bottom of the storage box as well
12) Dynamat on interior of doors – reduces door rattle, outside noise & give the doors a much better firm sound when they close
13) Optima Yellow Top battery
14) Series rubber front vent seals from George at Rovers Down South
15) All new lamp lens (amber, clear and red) from George at Rovers Down South (installed with stainless hardware)
16) Majority of hardware (except structural on frame) replaced with stainless
17) Garrison Outfitters replacement rubber window channels for both driver and passenger doors – great seal and NO typical D90 window rattle on bumps with these!
18) New fuel filter and synthetic oil change as routine maintenance about 2 months ago
19) Land Rover OEM rubber front floor mats
20) Land Rover OEM D110 rubber tub floor mat – customized by me to be removable WITH the bench seat and seat belts still intact
21) Land Rover NAS D90 service manual and CD

Full disclosure on known imperfections (past and current):
1) Whoever had the truck before me had mounted a bunch of speakers and amps in the tub (why I have no idea?!). As you can imagine, yes, they drilled holes in the tub (ugg!). I went to a local marine machine shop and had a custom fabricated piece of 1/8” aluminum made to cover these holes with the edges of each hole and the piece of aluminum securely sealed with some boat building 3M 5200 marine sealant slow set (had to set over 5 days). The piece was then further secured with stainless steel rivets (same size as standard rivets on a D90). After this process was complete, that was when the Rhinoliner was applied.
2) The same drilling above did put one small ¼” hole near the back top of the fuel tank. When the tank was full, I often noticed a gas smell but no visible fuel leaks. Per recommendations from D-90.com members, I fixed this hole with MarineTex, and it has been solid as rock without any issues for years now. I have checked the spot on several occasions, and it is solid.
3) The top of the boot on the turn signal only has a small tear, but the boot itself is pliable and not dry rotted at all.
4) The left side of the drivers seat has a small just under 1” rip, the backs of both seats each have a 1” rip up near the top center where it looks like the fold-up bench in the back probably caused (all there since I got the truck), but all seat cushions are still plush and regular and rest of seats are really in very good condition in appearance and comfort.
5) The hood and wings have a slight patina on the top, as George from Rovers Down South once described it to me. Meaning there a few little ripples from where some mechanic or someone in the past put his elbow or laid something while working on the truck. Pretty typical of D90s but just putting it out there.
6) There is a 2” crack/hole on the back left corner of the console (there since I got the truck) -- probably from someone tossing something into the back of the truck. It has not spread or widened in 6+ years and is a non-issue for me. If it just bothers you being there, I think it could easily be repaired with a fiberglass repair kit and/or some MarineTex.
7) “Cigar lighter” works (have plugged iPhone into it) but I do not have the cigar lighter
8) Male part of rear seat belts are from a D1 (have the original D90 female Y part), so they are a touch shorter in length than the original D90 belts (which were missing when I got the truck – guy never replied to my follow-up emails). They work and latch just like the D90 belt, but for a bigger adult riding in the back a little custom hanger for the top bolt as some have made on D-90.com would be necessary. I have just ridden my kids back here, so I have not done this yet. A new set of OEM D90 male belts is around $300.00.

Did you originally purchase this from a guy in Memphis, TN named Michael Gusmus?

Think Gusmus still has it. Saw it outside his house a few weeks back.

No the guy's name was Jonathan Morgan who I bought it from.

I will post some more pics tomorrow for all the thread and PM requests. Too late right now to go through resizing a bunch of pictures to post. I appreciate all the nice comments.

She looks great! We basically have matching dogs, too. Wait until the first time your dog climbs over the console and locks your radio or gets two nails under the volume control knob and it pops off while on the highway doing 70mph.
