1997 Defender 90 (NAS/JDM) 59k miles

Hi all!

Just a quick heads up that I'm going to be putting the below photographed '97 D90 on eBay this Sunday.

I'm starting the no-reserve auction at $50k

Those of you on the forum that know me, know that I'm quite honest and straight forward, as well as offering good vehicles for sale from time to time. This one is extremely clean and tight. It is a real jewel.

This vehicle was imported from Japan in March 2013 thru Savannah, GA. The vehicle was released from customs in May 2013 after passing US Road Inspection. The purchaser was a LR collector/enthusiast in Michigan, where it was titled. He sold the vehicle in January 2014. He advertised on this Forum.

At import, US DMV recorded the odometer at 45,706 miles. I have the AutoCheck detailing all of this information, the VDO documentation, and also the name and phone number of the importer, as well as the second owner who purchased it from him before it came to me.

Japanese Domestic Market D90s are the same spec as the NAS trucks, with a few add-ons such as factory A/C and power windows.

I would appreciate it if the subject matter experts on the panel don't fill up this post with discussion on JDM versus NAS since there are plenty of other discussions on that already. But I'm not afraid to say they are every bit the same vehicle as the NAS if only sold to a different market originally.

With the crazy prices I see for NAS vehicles going for $70s, $80 or more, I believe this truck is at a great price point. (However, if anyone wants to pay $80 for this, I'm ok with that... )

When I received the vehicle it had, and still has 59k (and change) miles.

I replaced the factory shocks and springs with Old Man Emu, added TerraFirma wheel spacers, and replaced the grill and bevels around the lights since the old were faded.

As you can see from the picture, this is really a sharp D90.

Please visit the eBay posting starting Sunday morning. I will post the link here once the auction is up.

Thank you for visiting and any comments or questions are welcome.

Joe

What you need to address is the odometer. Imported Japanese Defenders odometers were in KM, so good odometer documentation is important. Unfortunately there are a number of dirt bags selling Japanese Defenders on eBay not sharing this information - duping people that the vehicle has lower miles than it really does. This is what has been making these models not credible to sell to the knowledgeable LR buyer.

GLWTS seems like you are being honest which we all appreciate.

Excellent point.

I have a report showing the date of import and within a month the DMV recording of the odometer at 45,706 miles. And I have the VDO calibration documentation. So there is a high degree of certainty that the miles it is reflecting are as close to accurate as you are going to get with a JDM.

Upon inspection I'm sure any potential buyer will realize this is the real deal.

Thanks again for your comments.

This complaint has never made sense to me. Odometers on a 20yo vehicle in 9/10 condition seems like a weak excuse not to buy a truck you plan to use and enjoy over a comparable truck with an original odometer for $20k more.

I totally agree, a non to very minor issue on a truck that looks this clean at this price. Especially given the fact that the odometers in these trucks were not afraid to fail. GLWTS, looks like someone is going to get a really nice clean truck.

You can just unplug or unbolt the speed sensor/cable too. Original speedo or not. That makes this imported truck no more or less legit than any US odometer reading.

Truck looks awesome at what seems to be a VERY fair price. GLWS.

This is a nice truck at a decent price. The issue with any import though is there is no paper trail from the start in the USA. With most trucks you run a carfax and see the mileage going up. With this one you don't. Obviously you should always buy on condition.

Agreed nice truck, but what's the price? Did I miss it? I of course see the opening price, but I thought forum rules required EBay sellers to list reserve price, Buy It Now, or list a price that the auction would be ended at for a forum member. Is this place moderated at all anymore?

Yea so, it's a no reserve auction.

Started at $50k and I did not list a "Buy It Now" price because I wanted to give anyone who was interest the chance to take a shot and let the free market take its course. But anyone who wants to reach out directly also has that option too.

Hopefully that addresses the question.

Thanks again for all the well wishes.

Hello Joseph,

Is the current odometer in KM or Miles?

Mileage was 45,706 (km) at time of import?

Current mileage is 59,644 in Miles?

Was the odometer changed out to a NAS odometer and calibrated at the time of import?

I sold my 97 a few years back and am interested in getting back into another D90.

Thanks - Darin

Darin,

The miles (not KM) were 45,706 on the VDO (which replaced the original odo) as recorded by the DMV on April 3, 2013. As was noted previously, the vehicle was imported on March 7, 2013

In other words, the vehicle was imported and within a month the VDO was calibrated to reflect the miles (approximately 45k) that the previous odo would have reflected in KM. And you can get a high degree of confidence that this was the case by looking at the vehicle and observing how little wear and tear it has. It is exactly what you would expect to see for a vehicle of this mileage.

So in my opinion, for an import of a JDM, this was done as it should be done given that the audit trail is difficult to prove 100%. Also, this is why I'm comfortable being so transparent because this vehicle stands up to scrutiny.

If you are seriously interested and able, I welcome you to come take a look or have a trusted third party check it out for you. You won't be disappointed.

Thanks for your interest. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Joe

That's a question for more knowledgeable SMEs on the forum.

I don't know if it would be exempt based on age.
