you can find out- the number is right on the side

ZF 4HP 24 # 744 or #748 will be the correct 300Tdi transmission

For those of us not familiar with these conversions / transmissions, what is the difference between the 744 and the 748? What makes the 748 the "correct" tranny?

Shift points for one thing. The V8 transmission is made to have higher rpm shift points than the TDI

Jeff noted that both of those were for diesels. Tony was asking what the difference was between the 2 diesel transmissions.

The main difference in v8 vs tdi is the governor. I am unaware of the difference between 744 and 748

From my limited knowledge from researching this a while ago I think as mentioned, the regulator/governor and valve body is indeed different due to the shift points happening at a much lower rpm, and the torque convertor is different also...typical stall speed on a v8 is around 1700 rom, on a diesel it will be much lower... I think if it wasn't a diesel trans it would be pretty much undriveable and very obvious, so I'm guessing it's got the right one in it if it drives decent..

Killer deal really. Converting to auto (correctly) is much more complicated and expensive than the 5spd.
I have both 300tdis 5spd and auto's in RRC's and I'd actually take the auto for offloading any day of the week. Something I never would have thought until I owned it.
