I just saw John and he mentioned his truck was for sale. It will just not be right with only one Red 90 owned by a John in town.

Free bump for a fabulous truck and the nicest owner you'll meet.

John, is your Defender still available? Also can any of the more experienced members shed some light of it's importability to the US? Seems like the certification from Rover that John has plus the US VIN number should be enough, but I'm new to all of this so I'd really like to hear what someone with more knowledge has to say. Thanks in advance

It's still available Chris. My understanding is that it should be importable since it's a NAS. I'm no expert but would be happy to assist as best I can. I'd recommend using a reputable importer to ensure everything goes smoothly.

The VIN is: SALDV3285SA972304

Here are pics showing the EPA conformity.

Chris, I would get ahold of Uncle Douglas here on the forum. He has imported hundreds if not thousands of defenders and would be the one to answer your questions and get it done. He did mine with out issue and I could not have been happier with his service. Doug Crowther at Dividingcreekimports.com

Guys thanks for the quick replies. John when are you available to discuss some details on the truck. Provided everything checks out with NC DMV as far as getting it titled here (which I expect it to) I'm very interested in it. Thanks again

I've been in contact with Uncle Douglas from Dividing Creek Imports and he has (patiently) answered all my questions regarding importing. He's indicated he's never had an issue.

Curious why owner went with a 1.4tc auto combination? Makes it quicker on the starts but do you top out at higher speeds?

Despite what Johns saying I don't feel comfortable that his truck could be imported. From what NTSB has told me it's very likely that his truck isn't good to go due to the auto transmission that does not conform to the VIN. I've seen the emails with Uncle Doug and while Dougs answered his questions he hasn't been able to definitively answer if the transmission not matching the VIN on an NAS truck makes in ineligible for import. For anyone looking to buy that I've been told by someone at NTSB that it creates issues for a US buyer. Best of luck with the sale John, but I think you should be sharing the whole story with people.

I'm not trying to hide anything. Chris, you were only CC'd on the first few messages to Doug. After that Doug reassured me all would be fine. I was just passing along the information for the benefit for those who may still be interested.

"John,
I have never had an issue as I said before. I totally understood what you were saying..."

Seems odd to not pass it on to me directly then. Considering the last we spoke on Thursday I was still willing to buy it if all the issues could be resolved. So send me the messages from Doug so I can see for myself that Doug says there are no issues concerning the specific issues with your Defender and its import

Hi Chris, great to hear you're still interested. My apologies, I had taken it that you had moved on. I'll forward Doug's emails to you. Cheers, John

Thanks. Yes, it's still for sale. I'm in the process of researching the import eligibility and things look promising.

I've tracked down the dealer in the UK that bought the prototype directly from Land Rover in 1997. Rogers of Bedford is the dealer and they had the Defender as a toy for a year. Then in 1998 they sold it to the original owner that I in turn purchased it from. Jonathan Rogers confirmed the dealership changed the transmission from a R380 5-speed manual to the ZF automatic at the original owners request. He was reluctant to do so because of the ex-Land Rover significance. They came to an agreement that they would do the job provided all genuine mechanical and trim parts where used to give the vehicle a “Factory Finish” whatever the cost.

Meanwhile I've been in contact with US Customs and Border Patrol. First I posed the import question on the Contact Us section of the gov't web site. They came back with "The final decision is always made by the CBP officers who check the information." So fine, I called the Sweetgrass, Montana border and Officer Hastings there assured me that showing the email from Rogers indicating the transmission change would satisfy them to explain the VIN discrepancy. Then we discussed the EPA sticker under the hood and the Federal safety label on the lower A-pillar kick plate and confirmed everything is in order.

I encourage anyone interested to take the time and do you own research for your own peace of mind. The Sweetgrass border number is: (406) 335-9610. The CBP web site is: Contact Us | U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Maybe this has already been discussed but could you do a contingency sale? This is done all the time in other circumstances. It might be as simple as the seller and buyer meet at the boarder and once the vehicle is cleared for import the sale is closed. Buyer brings certified funds and seller brings all docs for export and bill of sale.

I'd consider a contingency sale. The buyer could fly to Calgary and check out the Defender at the airport. If you want to proceed we'd drive to the border together. I'm sure we can work out the logistics.

SOLD! The new owner crossed the border earlier this week and as it turns out Customs didn't ask or even look at the transmission.

Now, does anyone in Canada have a ST they want to get rid of?!

As you would expect and hope, but the risk is real and the final decision is made by the man at the gate. Glad to hear that she made it to the states safely.

The new owner drove it himself across the border. He had all the paper work prepared if there were any questions.
