1995 NAS D-90 w/ 53,000miles...$15,000

Here's the catch.

-it needs frame repairs (There are half a dozen holes)
-needs bulkhead repairs(holes)
-rear crossmember repairs
-rear bumper repairs (rusted through where you can fit your hand inside)
-both floorboards have been covered with riveted aluminum panels because they are rusted through
-body work on half a dozen dents and holes
-add soft top(doesn't have one)
-add third brake light
-new suspension bushings and steering
-brakes feel spongy
-idle is erratic
-about half of the exterior lights work
-2nd gear synchro grind
-seats recovered with retrim kit
-seat box recovered with same
-needs ~$12,000 in cash/parts.
-and 3 months of your life.

Just heard back from Matt.
"That 95 is a truck I bought in the Virgin Islands and sold. It's been restored and subsequently sold"

Darn it, got a cut&shut D1 chassis for.

Merry Christmas to All

To clarify....I bought that 95 Defender in the British Virgin Islands(long story), imported it, sold it. I thought incorrectly that it was to far gone. My brother sent me the link to its restoration.

So how was driving around the BVI in a D90? Wife & I just bought a house in the USVI & plan to take a D90 SW down as our DD when we retire. I'm thinking a galvanized bulkhead & chassis will be a necessity. Anything else?

Paul, Never drove the Defender in Tortola. I'm a yacht captain(Swan 56 at the time). Found the Defender abandoned in an alley in Road Town. We were just passing through. Sailed to SXM a few days later. My brother helped me track down the owner in Dominica. I was able to purchase the vehicle...with a lot of help from Tropical Shipping and Burke's Garage. The truck was shipped to West Palm, trailered to another brothers garage in Ormond Beach. I saw the truck there, for the second time, almost a year after the day I found it.

The salt air is hell on Defenders. To many dissimilar metals. The bulkhead/chassis upgrade is an excellent idea. I might also recommend polyurethane bushings all around. The fuel lines were all but disintegrated when I found the truck.

Thanks for the info! I was hoping to hold off on buying a 90 for a few years so I can import a true defender, with the upgrades that came in with that model. But now I am considering an older model & just replacing the chassis & bulkhead with galvanized metal. Might get them powder coated too, just for good measure. Also trying to decide whether to go with a diesel or gas motor. I am pretty sure I want an auto trans as the USVI is pretty steep with a lot of stop & go driving. For sure I want a RHD as they drive on the other side down there.

Thanks again

Paul.

Horsey - was your pic taken in the surfside beach parking lot?

Paul - Having a stick & Manual Downshifting is key on the hills in St. John; otherwise you will put a lot of wear & tear on your brakes. When my friend's grandfather was well into his 80s, he drove a Ford PU from his farm in way upstate NY to Miami, put it on a container, and picked up in St. John. hard core... Anyways that PU was an automatic and he was not happy with it on the hills vs. his old ride which was a manual CJ-7. Even if he downshifted with the auto tranny, it was never as good as the CJ. Anyways, something to think about. Stainless brake lines & SS exhaust would also be good additions for your D90 down there.

I wonder if Matt Hendrick's old 90 (2783) made it over to St. John from BVI. I saw a white ST years back coming off the car ferry in Cruz Bay.

We'll be on St. Thomas (lot more traffic) so I was thinking 200 Tdi mated to an auto tranny would be best, but due to the engine noise I am now considering a V8. So now the question begs- 200 & manual or V8 & manual? I'll definitely upgrade to stainless where I can. I was in the USVI twice this year but didn't see any Defenders- just a Discovery 2 on St. John.

The long story....My 95 was originally owned by a famous tennis player in south Florida. He traded it in after a year. The architect that designed the resort on Guana Island bought the truck from a dealer in West Palm and shipped it to the BVI. Many years later, a local prison guard found the truck on Guana, abandoned, and it was given to him. He restored it. It was his pride and joy. While the 95 was at a garage in Road Town for new brakes, this was years later, that prison guard died of a heart attack. His wife, in distress moved to Dominica and sent word for the garage to sell her husbands beloved Defender. The garage never got word of the mans death, her move, or her request to sell the truck. After several years they moved the Defender into the alley outside their gate and abandoned it. The day I found the 95 I pulled a credit card bill out of the console and took it with me. With that, William my brother, god only knows how, was able to track down the late owners wife. He gave me her phone number in Dominica. I called and introduced myself. I told her I had once owned a white Land Rover like her husbands. I asked her to tell me it's story. I asked would she sell it to me and she said, "I'm sorry but, our beloved Land Rover was sold shortly after my husband passed away, owning that truck gave him the best years of his life".

After I told her the garage never got her message, we had the truck appraised and I paid her a fair price for it. She was thrilled. Burke's Garage then picked up the 90 and got it running. It took another 6 months to sort out the title paper work, ship it home. At first i wanted to restore the truck. I had hoped the 95 would fill the void left by #646, from when I sold it but, it wasn't the same. So I let the BVI truck go.

For their efforts...My brother William now has one of the trucks BVI license plates on the front of his Jeep. The other plate hangs in my brother Ben's garage in Daytona.

2 years later, I got back my Defender, #646...yet another long story.

awesome thread with great backstory!!! Love this shit! I recently got a 1980 Natural Art twin fin surfboard shaped by the elusive master of epoxy surfboards, Greg Lohr. I'm "friends"with Greg on Facebook and he was able to date the board and explain the serial #. Then Natural Art chimed in with their ad for surfing mag in 1980 and low and behold, there's my board down in the bottom right hand corner. I know this is waaaaay off topic here but love the backstorys like this. Sorry for the highjack.
