Plenty of 2.5NA (12J) or 2.5 turbo (19J) motors floating around for cheap (Sub $1000 shipped) Don't give up! Find a replacement motor and stay a Defender owner. Get a few fellow Austin TX board members and throw a wrenching party for the install. It looks like to nice of a truck to give up on.

Luis and Carmen should be able to help with the engine swap. Who else is in the AUS area?

I imported this vehicle from Spain in May. I drove it for a few months and it drove great, my whole family just loved it. I then dropped it off at Austin Roverworks /Texas Defender Imports to have them fully inspect the vehicle and fix any issue they could find. I spent $2600 with them and they replaced the power steering hoses, pump, gearbox, turbo oil line, valve cover, and axle seals. Upon the final test drive before delivery back to me, the engine quit on them and when they cracked it open there is enough internal damage to the Pistons, etc that it is a total loss. Needs replacement. I have about $25,000 into this truck right now with the repairs I've done and import costs. I have dreamed of owning a 90 since I was 16, I finally got one but now my dream is over. I can't go any farther.

I have the stamped customs HS-7, all import paperwork, Spanish title, and Bill of sale. Because I can't drive it to get it inspected, I can't get it registered in Texas and get it plated. But, all the paperwork needed to do this is ready for you. All import taxes are paid.

Other than the motor, this is a really nice defender. Has full Exmoor interior, rear Exmoor jump seats, Exmoor steering wheel, Pioneer CD Player with Aux Input. New Rear carpet. I also installed Exmoor 3 Point shoulder belts for the rear jump seats. I have a brand new Exmoor center seat cover but haven't installed it yet.

Please PM offer if you are interested.
You'll likely have to take a significant loss for a non-runner, so determine how much you're really willing to lose vs. how much it'll cost to replace the engine. It will likely be far cheaper to do the conversion as long as you don't depend on Roverworks to do it (nothing against them, just talking dollars and cents). That way you won't lose your shirt in the deal, and your dream will live on.

Oh and a price is required. :

Thanks for all the advice. Perhaps I will attempt a 19j replacement on my own. Anyone have a lead on one?

Serious. Enlist some help from the active Austin member on the board. It shouldl take you one day and you will learn a lot about your truck. One for one swaps are easy.
All you will need are hand tools and an engine hoist. The hoists rent for less than $50 a day or grab one on Craigslist. It would be worth refacing the fly wheel ($50) and swapping out the clutch and pressure plate ($150-$250) while it is all apart but with help is very easy to do.

To put the above comments into dollars and cents, or sense as this case may be:
As is, maybe $8-10k- could be less...
Running even with a 2.5 NAD and titled, $20k, or more
Cents or sense?!

I imported a vehicle site unseen from Spain and it ran fine for the month that I got to drive it, I understand this is a buyer beware world, I don't fault Gas Donkey. Just bad luck on my part.

Some of this doesn't add up. You drove it for a few months in the US on the foreign tags? You can't get a title for it without passing inspection first???

Most states will give you a title regarldess ofwhtehr the csr is running or what. They may need to see it before giving you a title sine its a grey market vehicle.

But without a valid title in youtr name, it is just pile of parts on wheels. The customs paperwork is non-transferable.

How did the motor "quit" on them? What did they do to it? What did they find when they "cracked it open?"

Dale ,

Correct me if I am wrong, but this truck is nothing but a parts truck , I remember Doug saying ( in the past ) that there was no way in Hell, you can title a recent import on someone else's name, even with a BOS

Am I wrong?

And if right, isn't a valuation for said truck too high at 8-10 for parts?

OP, listen to all the suggestions in getting it fix and titled to at least recoup most of your mula if still want to pursuit a sale

I don't know if it is different with dealers, but I know that I couldn't get the title for my 90 from a Texas dealer without them having it inspected and registered first. I know Arkansas will give me a title for anything, whether it runs or not.
