Most states will give you a title regarldess ofwhtehr the csr is running or what. They may need to see it before giving you a title sine its a grey market vehicle.

But without a valid title in youtr name, it is just pile of parts on wheels. The customs paperwork is non-transferable.

How did the motor "quit" on them? What did they do to it? What did they find when they "cracked it open?"
What doesn't add up for you? Yeah I drove it around my city for a month on foreign tags. I was waiting for my stamped HS-7 from customs, it was an ordeal. The truck has to have an inspection before a TX title can be issued. I did not get this because I was waiting for Roverworks to complete their work before I had it inspected.

Am I wrong?

And if right, isn't a valuation for said truck too high at 8-10 for parts?

OP, listen to all the suggestions in getting it fix and titled to at least recoup most of your mula if still want to pursuit a sale

Goose,
I am no expert on imports, done none myself- always used Doug. But, I do agree on pile of parts, and the only reason such a high number is the LHD dash, and nice interior. Still likely very optimistic, but really trying to make OP realize he will take a big bath should he not follow through with title and get it running- numbers aside....

Good luck. Please consider swapping in a 200tdi rather than throwing in a 2.5 NA or 2.5 TD. Especially if you are paying for labor. It is one thing to spend a weekend swapping a motor on your own, but if you are paying for labor, the cost of a 200tdi makes a lot of sense from a resale perspective not to mention it is a much better motor. It might be harder to find a defender 200tdi than a 2.5 NA, but it is very much worth it IMHO.

Thanks for all the advice. I shouldn't have posted without thinking about it. Just a knee jerk reaction an hour after the mechanic called me. I will be looking for an engine and doing the swap myself. Any leads appreciated....

That seems like a good deal on a defender 200 tdi.

I'm sure this will stir the pot however if you decide to go the Tdi route, consider talking to Zombi Motors up in the Pacific Northwest and use Fastenal to ship. Just like any review and personal opinion, there are good and not good however I have had good dealings with Zombi!!!
