You can buy them all day long in Europe for $10k-15K. Think about it, we are talking about a common 25 year old utility vehicle. It would be like buying a 1983 Ford F150 for 15K!

Calvin VIN Decoder will give you the basic info such as year, motor type and so on.

I would also be intrested in hearing how to decode the Reg plate

The only way I have been able to get build dates was from the mobile heritage museum @ Gaydon.

Probably just a US thing but my SIII had a plaque on the inside of the door opening giving the month and year of build.

I imported my 83 110 last year that I had built from the ground up while I was stationed at RAF Mildenhal UK. I tried to ship it the first part of January but as the Air Force was shipping it to the states I had to wait for the date that it was first registered not the build date, so I had to wait till May. Not sure if that was the Air Force rule or what. I left mine RHD and love it, the looks I get when driving down I-10 in Tucson are cool.

Why, Thank you kind Sir! I am getting the roof painted back to the correct color, wheels either painted or swapped, 32 inch bfg tires, and getting the paint off the cappings hopefully this week. Also planning to put a new grill, light surrounds, and front bumper on it to freshen it up a little more and may try to paint the bulkhead back if I can match it up. Will see...

I drove this truck a couple days ago (had just looked it over before) and it is worth every penny, without a doubt.

Just an update, got a set of defender alloy wheels and some 265/75/16's put on. Also noticed it has 4 wheel disc brakes... Putting a grill and some headlight surrounds from a NAS 97 in this weekend...

So worked on the truck some more today. Got the cappings completely done and now that they are back to galvy and not black it really made the truck look better. Also got the front end taken apart and am going to try to finish painting the newer headlight surrounds and grill and get them in this week. She is really coming around...Someone buy this before I keep it!

Dave,

Re decoding the registration plate - A 986 TDE

This assumes the plate is original to the truck as some are changed to become personalised to a vehicle/owner/profession - for example COM1C, D1SCO, these have to have been available and cannot be requested - its also not allowed to change the plate to one which would make the vehicle appear newer.......

Anyroadup to A 986 TDE

The "A" would signify the year of registration in this case between 1 August 1983 and 31 July 1984

The numbers "986" are random

The "T" is also random

The "DE" shows the area of the UK where the vehicle was registered - in this case Manchester in Lancashire UK

My old Series 3 Airportable (Lightweight) was originally used on military registration plates so when sold off and civilian registered was given an age related plate (there were always some left over) so as it left Solihull in 1980 and proof could be obtained from LR, it was registered XYB 718W (Suffix Plate - the year identifier is at the end rather than prefix where the year identifier is at the beginning) The YB relates to the area where it was civilian registered Taunton in Somerset, and the W is 1980. If you see a UK registration plate that begins with a "Q" that would signify questionable heritage - the vehicle will be legal, but perhaps built from several parts (kit car/hybrid/or ex military where year of build has been lost)
This link gives more info..............

That rambled on a bit!
Hope it helps!

Thanks for the free bump. Just accepted an offer today and will be meeting the buyer at the airport on Thursday so thus far it appears to be sold and heading to a good home in NY. I have another one on the way in that has a galvy chassis so keep yours eyes open for more details.

Chuck

Chuck,

Hope it works out.

Keep a few of these babies coming in. One day soon I'll be able to buy one!
