1983 Mercedes-Benz 280GE (Dealer)

Good afternoon,

Someone on the forum suggested we might want to post this, despite it not being a Landy. If this is isn't ok, please let me know and we won't post these here again. Thanks!

This truck is a 1983 Mercedes-Benz 280GE. It is currently registered and inspected, ready for sale at the dealership in Richmond, VA. We invested a good amount of time fixing any rust, and repainting the entire body before export, as well as having the motor gone through (more below). This truck was on BaT about a month ago; a buyer put down a deposit, and only yesterday decided he wasn't interested. So, it's back up for sale.

1983 Mercedes-Benz 280GE
- 2.8L 6-Cylinder Gas Motor
- 4 spd manual transmission
- 4-Door truck, Seats 5, with cargo hold
- Clear CBP, DOT, and EPA paperwork conveys with the truck
- Located in Richmond, VA (Japanese Classics, LLC)

Available for sale $21,500.

Paul drove this over 1,000 KM around Spain before getting it back to the shop, in what was the ultimate shake-down cruise we've had so far. More about that here: http://www.valenciaclassicvehicles.c...des-benz-280ge

From Caceres, Spain. 119,000 miles. Fresh "weissengelb" ("wheat yellow") paintwork over black and gray plaid cloth and black vinyl interior. Alloys. 2.8L DOHC inline 6-cylinder gasoline engine and 4-speed manual transmission. Locking front and rear differentials. No rust. Mechanically excellent with freshly rebuilt fuel distributor, new injectors, exhaust, cold start sensor, and more. Cruises easily at 110kp/h with plenty more in reserve. No smoke, idles smoothly and accelerates very well. No leaks. Trailer hitch with electrics (EU specification). Nearly new BFGoodrich All-Terrains. Interior original. An honest, rust free, low mileage G-wagen that has fresh paint and good upholstery.

Body / Interior: Original interior, plaid upholstery is in good shape. We didn't recover anything, and while it shows some signs of being 30+ years old, it looks great.

Drivetrain: Described by my local Mercedes mechanic as the "Singer Sewing Machine" engine due to it's methodical tick, the motor pulls strong and will comfortably do 65-70 on the highway. Injector pump was fully rebuilt, and the motor has fresh injectors and spark plugs.

I tossed in a few photos from Cars & Coffee up here in DC a few weeks ago for good measure. Enjoy!

Please drop us a note if you're interested. Thanks so much!

Bill & Paul

---

We've posted before, but to reintroduce ourselves: We've started a small vehicle importation company focused on bringing antiques back from Spain. It's a fun project that lets us see, touch, and drive some neat classic cars and trucks we might not otherwise have the opportunity to. We're a two man operation, with Paul based in Javea, Spain, and the other (me) here in Virginia. Our focus is to shed light on the otherwise murky process of bringing vehicles back from overseas and bring some honestly and transparency to the process. To that end, Paul works hard to document the process of finding the vehicle, capturing a story and photos on the trucks. We bring some transparency to bare by selling our trucks through a dealer. This truck is being offered by Japanese Classics, LLC in Richmond VA where it comes with a clear VA Title.

Our little company is called Valencia Classic Vehicles. Our website is here:

Nice looking truck...and good luck with your venture, most of us on here can appreciate the rare classics that aren't usually found here.. When you look at what you can get for the same price point in a comparable defender it makes these G cars look like a steal..

Love it and love the G Wagon. My wife and I each have one (new generation thought 2014s). Great vehicles and love the classic look of this (and color)

Thanks all! With regards to the A/C, yes. The compressor is still there, but isn't connected.

Good Morning,

The truck is located at the dealership, Japanese Classics, LLC, in Richmond, VA:
Japanese Classics - 100% Legal Imported Japanese Cars

It's a small hike from Northern VA, but their protected indoor facility on the Richmond Airport campus is hard to match. Add in their familiarity with importation documentation, inspections, titling, and registration, and they're a great partner to have on board to make sure everything we import is safely and legally ready to hit the road.

Chris is the main POC down there, and they can be reached here:

5251 Air Express Rd
Richmond, Virginia 23250
804-677-1419

They're normally around on weekends, and would be happy to show and facilitate test drives. I've attached some photos they took of the truck once it reached their facility.

Has anyone ever owned one of these. If so, any comments on the vehicle in general - not this one particularly.

I have one. albeit a 1989 SWB. the engine (280GE as this one is) was as sweet as a nut. I've pulled it and am mid way through installing an OM606 and 5 speed auto.

with all the carpet etc inside it's quieter than a defender. I drove one with an OM606 and 6 speed CLk manual box, and that was quieter than a defender diesel too, however the original MB300 D's were a bit, err, rattly.... and slooooooow

On BaT, there was some discussion around the same question. Might be helpful. The one comment I'd add pertains to highway driving. I had it on Rt. 267 and I-495 without issue. It cruises comfortably around 65 and will do more; feeling solid and uneventful as it cruises along.

Diesel_Jim - I'm getting slightly off topic for a moment: Have you driven both a 280GE and a 300GD here State-side? I wonder how they compare in drive ability? We're looking at a couple LWB and SWB 300GD's, but haven't made a decision yet.

HI William

I'm in the UK. I have a 280GE (which is currently engineless), but not driven the 300GD... only relaying on what everyone seems to say on the G forums... the old OM617 is slow rattly and noisy.

I've driven a LWB with the OM606 and 6 speed manual conversion... that thing flew. Would be a good conversion on any G, I reckon.

cheers

Jamie
