130 values

Sort of in the market, been lurking around here, and not finding good comps to use as a benchmark.

That said, what's a well-sorted mid-80s Defender 130 worth? The one in question I'm looking at is left-handed drive (converted), has air-conditioning (added after the fact), and has a turbocharged direct injection motor (i.e. tdi...also a conversion). All conversions were professionally done. Frame is original non-galvanized but in great condition, paint is just OK (20 footer).

All input from "the experts" is mucho appreciated.

Depends on the amount of rust you want to look at. $20k all the way up to $80k. You could have a really nice runner, no rust, nice paint and interior, for around $35 to $40k. Everything else is a compromise.

The 130's are mostly work trucks in the UK. You can find some station wagons but not often. More than likely you are going to find a pick up or a double cab. Have you taken a look at an older Chevy work truck...beat up right. Problem is finding one that meets your list. The factory LHD are very hard to find. It can be converted over but will cost you as the parts for a factory conversion are getting hard to come by. Engine swaps are easy in the UK but most that I have seen are not too nice unless you pay top dollar for that. Some companies are bringing over anything that you want, if it makes it past customs, but you cost will be 40K up. There are some fine companies re-building them here in the States but you should expect to pay, again in excess of 40K.

finding ones the issue i'd think. Most double cab 130s are bought and run by utility companies and get a hard life. there are a few later td5 130 DCs on ebay for around £10-15k.

personally i'd lake a BIG engine in a 130 as they are HEAVY!

I agree, I would like the 130 with a good gas motor over the diesels, and I love the diesels. Just saying. With that said...Doug drives the heck out of his 130 with the 300Tdi towing and all, and loves it.

You might be able to find an ex-mod 127. I have seen a couple on the UK market in the last couple months.

I have a 1987 Tdi 127/130 that will be available in February or March when we are finished with it . Its is a true 80's truck and will have a build certificate from Gaydon certifying it is a 1987/127. We are doing a body off refurbishing. New outer wings, bumper, flares, exmoor retrims, left hand drive conversion etc, repaint in white etc. You are welcome to contact me if you'd like.

No this isn't my 84 that I have been driving for years.

Jblake if you want a 130 I would say the best option would be to get one from Doug (130Tdi). Then you know its legal and not only that you know it will be good to go. The 127's my UK partner checked out where all used vary hard by the previous owners. You just dont see any decent ones on the market in the years needed for the states.

Doug,
I’ll be in Annapolis to fish the Opening Day Boatyard Tournament on April 21st. If your 127/130 is still available at that time let’s try to get together over that weekend. In the meantime, good luck with the sale!

Wow, thank you for all of the responses! I may not have been clear above, but I am actually looking at a specific vehicle at the moment. Was really just trying to determine if the pricing was appropriate before making the purchase.

So just to re-cap, if I had an original 80's truck (so-so paint, but solid chassis) with some decent upgrades/conversions (left hand drive, AC, Tdi) would $30-35,000 USD be way too much to pay? Or - from the sounds of it - would that actually be considered fair market value?

Thanks again for all of the help & input.

30k would be considerably below market for a lhd tdi 130 thats solid.
Market for a solid 130 tdi with lhd is above 40.

a rare beast anyway let alone stateside. lhd and ac is a big ask so my guess is that 40k+ usd seems fair.

I sold a D130 RHD rebuild in 2009 for $55,000 and it was RHD, Bonatti Grey, XS spec with heated seats, and 300tdi, vehicle lives in NY state.

If you can get a very solid 1987 127/130 LHD 300Tdi LHD with AC for $30-35k, lock it up immediately. If you are not interested, PM me with sellers details.

I have a 1987 127/130 LHD with Mike at RiverHouse and it will be far in excess of $35k when it is done. Best of luck!!

Solid LHD 130 w/ A/C in new condition will fetch good money, >$60k- if done right. If a poor example, or title issues- like as a Series, walk away as it will ultimately cost more to get it right...

I think the prices talked about are a bit high, but everything depends on condition. I can see a solid frame beater sell for 20k even if LHD and Tdi. Pretty commands a premium in imports because so many are not.

Another option is to find a nice 110 and convert to a 130, but that has to be a 10k proposition and that would be just to weld and shunt the frame (not a new frame which would add considerably to the cost).

Keep an eye on ebay.co.uk and import one is another option. I forget what it sold for, but Doug had linked one a while back that was importable. Based on my old LR mags, they started making a lot more of them starting in 88 or so depending on your time frame (still relative as to what a lot is).
