im thinking of going g-wagon, since any toyota 7x series troopy you find here is a beat piece of shit. im just not sure the path i want to take. i like the simpler early 460-461's, especially a 461 diesel. im just having a hard time with the price on them. as more of the MBUSA g500s find their way out of the mall mom garages.... prices are gonna drop. im bettin about 15% a year. that green one here, the guy wants 30g. you can get one that 10 years newer, with real horsepower (gasser), same mileage for 26g. youre stuck with a nav screen and all the cushy bling... but maybe that aint so bad. i like trucks that feel like trucks... like a defender.

im gonna miss the 110. im sad already. its got a cool factor like no other 4x4xfar.... i just dont fit, and i didnt have the heart to take it off road!

we'll see what i end up with. maybe ill just go back to beating on an fj60. theyre fucking disposable.

Having grown up around GD300s I can tell you they are one hell of a truck. My granddad had an MB truck dealership in Dallas in the 70s and early 80s, and would import Gs for himself (grey market). We owned an '04 G500 until last year. If you go the G route avoid the late 2000 model, and all of the '01, '02 and '03s. 2004 and up is better. Here is a link to what I call the G-Wagon Source
I like the Defenders better because, hell I have no idea! I have always called the G-Wagon a Defender with all the BS worked out of it.

Jon, what do you think of the 2005 MB G500 Grand Edition?

the 2005 G500s are considered even better than the 2004s
the Grand Edition (2005 only) simply had a badge on the front quarter panel, and I think they (Chrysel/MB) were talking about discontinuing the G brand soon after 2005.

Zimm, I went from an NAS 110 to a G500 ('03) almost 2 years ago. Emotionally, I miss the 110 dearly (although it went to a really great home ) and I'll likely have another Defender at some point when I won't need to rely on it as my daily transportation ** -- which is probably why I still lurk around this forum.

The worst thing about the G is the MB badge. Other than that, it has been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned, especially when I really can only have one vehicle to cover my daily driving duties as well as the recreational off-road excursions. The most vulnerable and notorious point in terms of creature comforts are the weak window regulators, which are expensive and challenging to replace, so an extended warranty is a good idea if only for that one issue. I've driven it about 12K mi/yr and taken it to some of the same spots that I challenged the 110 with successfully (the only modification being larger, more aggressive tires).

BTW, that's a cool factoid: the transmission computer and dash computer both have a factory setting that will allow calibration for 32" tires so that your speed, odo, and shift points are accurate (as well as ETC).

I had heard the same recommendations on model years that Jon suggested, and I was confident that with proper service and warranty campaigns resolved by prior owners that I wouldn't be plagued by the same gremlins and so far all has been well.

So, I'm not trying to sell G's to LR enthusiasts (I'm a fan of both), but thought I might be able to offer a little feedback since you indicated that might be a direction you're considering.

Another site to check out is Pointed Three

** I know a Defender is a capable daily driver, but after using them as such for 7 years my priorities changed and I wanted to spend the same time I put into my Defenders into other things. It has taken me a long time to get out of the habit of carrying 100 lbs of tools with me everywhere I go.

Jimmy,

Will you be he one taking it to Nantucket? If so, we should meet up. We have an Arles Blue 95 SW there. Just picked up a 110 that we will be cleaning up for the next year and then taking it there.

Scott

Yes. It is a Land Rover Mecca. At any one time in the Summer there are between 10-15 110's on the island. Tons of D-90s, Discos, etc. Our 95 has been there since 2001 with a short trip back to AZ last year for some refurb. With permits they allow you to beach drive. We go to Great Point (about 5 miles of beach driving each way). You'll see everything from completely restored Series 1 and II to the D-90 that looks like it has been sitting in salt water for ten years.

I am becoming an expert on corrosion prevention (both cars and houses) by frequenting the places. The D-90 is in like new condition after years of treating areas with Boeshield and the undercarriage with spray-on wax. Last year during the refurb in AZ we did waxoyl it. My goal for the 110 is to have it in good shape and after about 5 years on the island have a new chassis and bulkhead put on it by one of the east coast refurb shops.

off topic, but it looks like this thread has already been hijacked...

Scott,
by chance were you driving a NAS D110 in Tucson this past Christmas by the airport?

Not I. I just got my 110 four weeks ago. I live in the Phoenix area. Must say, I do not see many 110's in town. There are several 90s. I have to say I see more Defenders on the 14 square mile Nantucket Island in a day than I see in a month in Phoenix. Bought my 110 from a snowbird locally but the truck was in the midwest. It was in good condition with 34K miles. The only big issues were the mid west and New York salted roads.

I spent a week in Tucson and only saw one Defender, a NAS D110.
Was a little disappointed to say the least, but the D110 made up for it.
