110 Ex Saudi Question

Hello there,
I was wondering if anyone has dealt with or heard issues of ex Saudi Rovers.
I am thinking of purchasing an EX saudi 110. The idea of no salt, no water, etc sounds good when it comes to the usual rusting problems, however I was wondering what sand-desert like conditions can do to effect the rover?
Any help or thoughts would be much appreciated.
Cheers

The ones I have seen online look really rust free and most of them have AC which is really rare for an early 80s Land Rover.

I have worked on a few ex saudi trucks. They were unbelieveable. The frame was just lightly sandblasted, no rust anywhere. No cats and setup to run leaded gas.

Saudis have money to burn, I have seen some screwed up trucks come in from SA that were used to jump dunes, etc. The body condition is usually really really good due to the climate. To be honest I think I would rather take the chance importing from SA than England.

Where as the 110 Rovers in Saudi ?, I was there for a good while and all I saw were 109 models at the big depot near Al Kharj. They were brand new and the motors were stuck from sitting. The Bedouin snapped them up. I have looked for a LHD 110 for a while from the area but no luck so far

Sight unseen, be wary. Here in Qatar we do not drive just the dunes, but salt mud flats, and the ocean shoreline.

Most Landies gave up years ago trying to keep up with Land Cruisers and Patrols, and if you find one they are usually abandoned in someones yard and are totally thrashed.

All vehicles in the Gulf are driven really hard, whether on or off road.

The only recent 90's and 110s here are privately imported, generally coddled, and don't come up for sale.
There are some interesting ex military early leafers and springers around before they switched to Cruisers in the mid nineties.

Unless you can find an ex-pat chelsey tractor I would not bother with the hastle.

If you are seriously into Rovers there were a lot in Iraq in the pre 1st Gulf War days. I met a Land Rover technician in Amman Jordan who told me they had the Rovers lined up by the hundred and they basically just held them unused in reserve. Rover had to send people out there to re-comission them. I heard third hand of a few being brought out but never saw any in Jordan.

I'm the guy who bought the 1988 Saudi 110 via Mark from a Land Rover collector on the east coast. I spent 14k over the last year and a half fully restoring the truck. As most on here have speculated, the truck is left hand drive, has an AC unit similar to the 93 NAS 110s, and is completely rust free. I am confident that it is the cleanest classic 110 in the states. Now that I have finished restoring the truck, I am looking to sell it and start a new project restoring a series IIa. I have it listed on landroverexchange.com and will probably list it on d-90 forum this week.

Brenter, PM me if you want to see some pics of the truck. Also, I have a details list of all the restoration work and upgrades made to the truck.

Charles, shoot me a PM and I will send you the link to the photos. I am fielding interest from several potential buyers right now, but if I don't get it sold to one of them over the next few days then I will put it up on d-90 with a bunch of photos. The truck has a clean Texas title and was registered in Virginia by the previous owner. It is registered as a Land Rover "station wagon". The subject of the truck's importation and grey market registration has previously been discussed on the forum, so you can probably search and find it.

Ken, I don't really know for sure, but I do know that my system is identical to the one that made it into NAS 110s in 1993. These systems are notoriously inefficient, but here in Texas it's much better than nothing.

Just out of curiosity is that the same SA 110 station wagon that Mike Wesson in Sherbrooke originally imported, used to be blue and had really fat sand tires on it, with a roofrack and GPS antenna?

Cheers,
John

J, I'm pretty certain this is not the same truck. This truck was originally imported by a guy living in Georgia and it has always been alpine white.
