Transfer case play

When under the defender I tied to see if there was u-joint play and found both front and rear driveshafts turn freely for an inch or so. What gives. By the way, I was following threads on brake issues and discovered whoever said check wheel bearings on the front was right on. Last mechanic left axle snap ring clip? off ,no spacer and one lock washer, where there should have been two, and that let both nuts back off. Thanks for help

It could be excessive backlash at the diffs, spline wear in the Tcase input, or spline wear at the drive flanges. Then again, Land rovers tend to have more drivetrain slop Thant most, so it could be completely 'normal'.
