Newbie from FL

Good evening!
I've been shopping to purchase an SUV that's not too common. I initially was thinking an Isuzu Vehicross (I'm a fan of Dennis Rodman), then changed to a Cayenne, then again a G Wagon. I stumbled upon a photo of the D110 while looking at custom G500s, And I just fell in lust.
Been on the forums for the last few days looking at defenders for sale and a few of the discussions, and it seems that with a good source, a good importer, and some patience, I could get myself in a LHD d90 imported to the States under $16k
Not really worried much about the engine mileage as I'm leaning towards an LS swap and eventually redo and update the interior as well. Just need one that is in decent shape and complete.
Oh and anyone close to the Florida Panhandle with a defender, please let me know, as I would love to see one in person before purchasing one.

And from reading on the forum, It looks like I should contact Johan to source a Defender and Having Uncle Douglas import it, is that right ?!?!

Welcome.

Definetly drive in one before you buy. Try it out in multiple situations: highway, around town, off road. They ride like shit, are underpowered, lack modern amenities and rust more in hidden places (i.e. Bulkhead and footwells, chassis, door bottoms) than an ungalvanized anchor in the ocean.

-How will you use it? Daily? Weekends? Adventure?
-Do you enjoy driving farm tractors?
-What are you expecting? Budget for finished project?
-Who will do your routine maintenance? Do you enjoy wrenching?

These drive nothing like a G wagon along every front.

-Johan is great: clean trucks, LHD almost always, honest representation, spruces up with newer interiors and wheels at a reasonable price, and stays in touch with you throughout the process. I have purchased 1 vehicle from him, and if he ever lowers the price on his 130 camper...
-Doug: he knows the process better than anyone (WillH not included). He is active with updates, provides realistic expectations of shipping, delays, and total costs.

I purchased a 110 HiCap from Johan - $12,500. Post shipping, import, customs, Doug, state tax, I was up to $17,760. So, budget accordingly.

Welcome, there several trucks in the Panhandle. X2 on everything Xjahx stated. Do your research before plunking down your cash on one only to find out the dream is really a nightmare. Good luck with your search for an SUV.

Thanks everyone for the advice!
Mainly looking for a fun vehicle to drive around town in, and a few highway occasions. And I'll definitely hit some folks up so I can see their defender!

Much appreciated!
