I'm glad I was nice to that kid....
As a teacher, I have met many unique students over the years. The most recent sold me a Land Rover.
Like probably many of you here, I have a wish list of sports cars, trucks, motorcycles, etc.. that I would to one day love to own given the opportunity. On that list was a 1966-77 Ford Bronco. From a design standpoint, I love the simple, flat, purposeful, non-nonsense styling in addition to its offroad capabilities. Although the Bronco is great, it was only on the list because I thought I would never have the opportunity or financial resources to own a D90, my true 4x4 of choice.
So when John, one of my students I had a particularly good relationship with, comes to me after class and asks if I wanted to buy his dads Land Rover, I laughed and said No Thanks. Then he showed me the picture.... "John, do you know what that is? Its not just a Land Rover but a Defender 90. They are fairly rare and expensive." He replys, "Ya, Its cool. Do you want to buy it?" To make a long story short. I now own a 1995 D90.
When I went to go see it, I found out the Dad just needed to get rid of it. I has not been started in years, the rear crossmember is completely shot, the shock turrets are rusted to nothing, and the footwell in the bulkhead has seen better days. However, It did come with a bunch of new and used parts. A perfect project! (As if I needed another)
Although I cannot start the project for a while, I cant wait to take the rear tub off and get to work. It pretty much needs a complete resto and all systems need MUCH attention. In addition, because the purchase price was accommodating to say the least, I plan to ditch the 3.9 in favor of a 5.3 LS with auto.
Thanks to all on the board for sharing their experiences and expertise. I look forward to posting progress soon!
