Talking Hello from Washington DC

Greetings all!

Whelp I made the leap! I just made the deal to purchase a 1986 RHD Defender 110 straight diesel (no turbo) from friends of my wife. As far as I can tell pretty much everything on the thing is original... the plan is to replace things as they pop. Ideally I'd like to put in a turbo diesel down the line.

I'm curious without spilling the beans what people think the value of this one I snagged is. Photos are posted below. This one was brought in from Italy about 2 years ago when the owners where serving overseas and snagged it. Door bottoms are a mixed bag, some are in pretty strong condition, drivers side definitely needs some work. Otherwise the photos show it pretty well.

What say you? How much would you expect to pay for this guy?

Robert,

First, welcome to the group and congrats on the newest member of your family. Have seen this truck before. I was stationed in Italy as well and picked my 110 up when I was stationed over there. 89 110. As for value, I'll let the experts weigh in once they wake up. There is a Happy Hour where the local group get together every 3rd Thursday (Kilroys) 5250a Port Royal Road, Springfield, VA ... times vary, just check the below thread on the day of to see when peeps intend to show. 5-whenever Good place to get to know the group, talk shop, yadda yadda yadda

http://www.defendersource.com/forum/...23645-298.html

If you ever need any help don't hesitate to ask the group, had a wrenching party last month and we threw a 200tdi into my truck on a Saturday. Lots of knowledge in these parts, you just have to entice them with beer and food.

Hope to see you on the 18th at Kilroys!

Mike

Nice lookin' 110.

Door bottoms come, and door bottoms go....

At least those Italian frames stay pretty solid.

Having people speculate on value may just result in buyers remorse rather than that feeling of joy that you got a good deal.

I voted less than $30k cause no matter what you paid it appears it was south of thirty and I will be right. What's it worth. Well that requires closer inspection.

Welcome to the group.

Looks like a younger second cousin of my green one. If you like it and have plans to keep it and enjoy it then don't ask what its worth.

If you really want to know, this Buckskin one in beautiful original condition is selling for $35K.

Sword,

Yup yup, this is correct. My understanding was that the gent in the UK that sold it to the buyer I got it from had had bought it back from a gent he had sold it to that had taken it to Spain and used out on a farm out there... seems to have helped a bit with the rust, though there clearly is some that needs to be addressed. Not really sure how bad that rust is or isn't in terms of perspective (read: I dont have a lot!)

------ Follow up post added February 2nd, 2016 01:30 PM ------

Down Shift,

It was sprayed overseas. They were... generous with the spray and didn't properly tape off some of the rubber around the front vents and windshield but overall it seems pretty clean. The original color was an orange that actually was not too far off from the red so its not glaring where there is some chipping, etc.

1 of 40, That is a beautiful ride!

HA! Thats probably right... I wonder how much a new turbo diesel (all mechanical, no electric parts) is going to cost me when this baby pops.

haha... no I think I'll have this one for a while. It was a little tricky cuss we got it from friends... so ultimately I told my wife to tell them we would pay what they thought was the fair value. Honestly I'd have liked to get it for 4-6k less then we did, but it is what it is.... really just curious on what others think to help set my barometer / gauge.

So with that.... care to share!?

I know the Less than 15k folks are just busted my balls. I haven't seen any in that cost range close to the condition of this one. I just wanted to see who was going to play that game early so I could separate the ball busters from everyone else

So different question for the hivemind...

How bad does that rust look to the more informed eyes on the forum? I'll do a search of course but any quick points to a thread on how to treat / address the rust and then coat it?

That and a steer rack / tighten are my top two todos. The wheel has tooo much play for my tastes. Especially with being right hand drive, left stick. I need it tighter.
