Hello from Sunnyvale!

Hello Defender Source! Long time reader and dreamer!

I am happy to say that my wife and I have finally gotten ourselves our very own Defender! I had been planning (and saving) for about a year to go abroad, find a Defender and ship it back, and work through the titling process when our 1987 Defender 110 ex MoD popped up for sale in Texas fresh off the boat. To say the least it fit our budget, and I was on a two-leg Friday night Red-eye flight from the Bay Area to Houston and then a taxi cab and greyhound bus ride later I viewed the Tith.

I have to say the vehicle was in far better shape than I could have imagined and the pictures showed. Even the seller's description downplayed the condition of the vehicle. Zero rot, and fully functional. It still had the FFR batteries in the back and holding charge for the 24V system that ran the radios. My only complaint was that customs stole my passenger seat .

After running the vehicle around the storage facility and checking over all wear spots, the deal was done and I started the long drive back to Nebraska where it would gain it's US DMV docs. After a long day of driving, getting attention and giving rides at all the fuel stops, I had made it just South of the Texas - Oklahoma border (are we there yet???) when I was met by my folks and we threw it on a trailer and booked it back to Nebraska arriving at 5am Sunday morning.

For the entire drive the Tith performed great. I had zero power issues and it powered along at a nice 65mph on the flats. I was also surprised at how the vehicle (and I performed) in the hell-ish construction zone they call Fort Worth.

The next day was spent parading it around for the family and the in-laws. Smiles all around.

Overall we are incredibly happy with it and can't wait to get started on the overland build.

Now comes the next itch you'll undoubtedly need to scratch by buying upgrades.

Ha! That itch was there long before the plane landed in Houston.

Welcome and congratulations on your Tith!

Are you leaving it in Nebraska or going to try to register it in CA?

I am guessing he will wait a year before trying to register here.

Miles,

Hello! There's a LR club here and a few people with rovers in your area. I'm just north of you a ways, come grab a beer sometime!

DiscoDavis, you got it! The plan is to keep it titled as is, get some new U.S. life under it's belt and then try for the CA transfer. And once it makes it's way out to California (hopefully early June) the wife and I will have to head up your way!

Interested in joining the LR group for sure for some outings.

Hello Naplm00! I think I may have seen your Defender. Have you ever parked in the parking garage under the Safeway in downtown San Jose? My wife and I saw a really good looking defender in that garage a couple times over these last few winter months.

Once I figure out how to post pictures in the thread I will!...

Hello and welcome. I'm just up the way from you in Mountain View. As someone else said, there's an active club here (Northern California Land Rover Club (NCLR) - NCLR - Northern California Land Rover Club). I've got the same username on there as well. We meet several times a month. This forum is a great resource. I would recommend you take a look at both. It's nice to have the local resource as well.

I've got a 1985 110 that is nearly sold - guy is en route to pick it up now - but I still have my LR3. I have some parts laying around that you may be able to have if this guy doesn't take them.

Let me know if you need anything. I can give you a hand since I am local.

Nick

Thanks Nick! You are the second to suggest the NCLR. I will take a look tonight. I will be sure to let you know if I need anything. I am sure there will be plenty of work and questions to come up as we begin to work with the vehicle. Good luck with the sale! And in return let me know if you ever need a set of wrenching hands, I am always down to help on projects.

That's the one! I pointed yours out to the wife as we pulled into the garage. I think her seeing your Defender from a distance in person definately helped sway her blessing.

I really like it, great clean example of a soft top!

Definitely not from that Sunnyvale!

Ok got the photos to work. Here is the first few I took after purchasing the vehicle and lugging it around a crowded parking lot.

Looks good!

I know all that bare military metal is one of the more efficient methods of turning diesel fuel into noise!

Welcome, MrBlueSky, and congrats on your truck! I'm in San Jose, near the SJC airport.
As others have mentioned, definitely stop by NCLR as we have one of the more active LR clubs in the states - mainly because we have pretty awesome group of people (GuamPilot, Naplm00, nengelbrecht6, discodavis are all there), near perfect weather all year long, and trucks don't rust out.
First Saturday each month we have a MORG (monthly off-road gathering) at local OHV park, 3rd Thursday we gather for a social. Plus, a few overland trips coming up in next month: Baja, MX, Death Valley (twice) that members can sign up for if you're into multi-day trips. Couple members also hosts wrenching days, with access to tools and lift.

Anyways, stop by the club website, introduce yourself. Maybe come out to a social or MORG & meet other members. Now that Nick has sold his 110... you'll be great at filling the spot with another 110.

Here is a picture from our Members Appreciation Annual event in October.

Thanks Rob! I grew up in Albion Nebraska and spent a lot of time learning how to wrench in my Dad shop in Genoa, NE. Vehicular projects runs deep in our blood! Next time I am in Omaha I will let you know! Afraid the Defender will be getting sent out to California before then though...

Thanks everyone for the Welcome so far!
