Talking Hello from Southern California

Hey all,

Psyched I found this community! Happy to join your ranks as a newbie.
I'm obsessed with the Defender and am looking to buy the best truck I can get my hands on.
Hoping a good opportunity presents itself.

Thanks in advance for any advice or support you can lend.
I'll be reading and absorbing your compendium of knowledge over the holiday break.

Let the quest begin...

Tom

Read up on what is California legit, fly out to see it in person and you can't have a diesel so don't even think about it.

Welcome and keep us posted with what you are thinking of buying. It is a small community and we can save you a bunch of heartache and help you out when you need it.

Make sure whatever you decide on can pass the strict California emissions laws. If it is a ROW or grey market defender that you choose it doesn't matter if it passed a smog test and was registered in another state. California doesn't care about other states emissions. Even if it has already been registered in California if it hasn't been tested and approved by CARB and has the stickers to prove it then it is still not technically legal and may be flagged by Sacramento. I am going through this right now. It is not an easy process and it is not cheap. Can give you more advice if you ever have any questions. It's good you're doing the research first. I wish I had. Good luck

Or you can pick out a really cool ROW with a 200Tdi in it, buy it then register it in a free state then move to that free state so you can then pursue your happiness. The People's Socialist Republic of California does not like Defenders.

Hey all,

Thanks for the welcome and words of wisdom.

I want a Defender 90, one that is legal in CA that I can register and use regularly. The holy grail would be to find a NAS Defender 90 that was sold here in CA. My buddy owns a yellow 1997 but would never sell it haha. I don't particularly like yellow but the color would be easy to change.

I don't have the pocket book to spend $100k and go the custom rebuild route whether it's West Coast Defender or Arkonik or similar custom builder. Plus I really like the idea of a more authentic / stock look than that flashy rich guy image.

I would use the truck primarily for surfing and maybe some light outdoor adventuring on occasion. I'm definitely not a hardcore off roader. I believe the truck would organically become my Mon - Fri commuter vehicle since I surf almost every day and like to be ready to jump in whenever.

I did read North Defender's buying guide tips and they seem pretty legit.
And I will continue to read this site and hit you guys with questions when I have them.

Thanks in advance for the help and support!

Talk soon,

Tom

Well every single one of the NAS trucks is legal in CA as long as it will pass a routine smog check, which might require a tuneup for 93-95, and new O2 sensors for a 97. If you want the least hassle, that's your route.

Thx Neill.

NAS would be my ideal route for sure.
In your guys experience, how often do the NAS trucks come up for sale? I want a D90.
They seem to range in price pretty dramatically depending on mileage and condition.

And it sounds like chassis rust is the only major deal killer, which hopefully wouldn't be an issue in CA.

I will start moving my questions to the appropriate section of the site from here on out! haha.
Need more time to read the site....

Thx guys

Tom

Welcome, from another So Cal member. And good luck on that NAS search! If I see a d90 NAS down at Old Man's or Trestles, I'll know you were successful.
