Mandy,

Tell us more about off-roading in the Alps. Every time I see them, I want to air-freight my rig to Chamonix! From the Mer de Glas teleferique you can look across the valley and see double track lacing the high elevations. Can anyone get up there? Can you rent a well-equipped truck and join a trip?

Touring in the Alps.

Hi Doug.
We normally take some 6/8 trucks with us.
We driver to Dover jump on a ferry and are in France in 1 to 2 hours. price for a ticket for this years trip is 69! (sorry dont know what that is in Dollars)
Then we drive through the night and make our way to Milan (stopping when needed) to vist a friend and pick up some more trucks!
Then we head to Susa (Italian Alps) and spend a week or so driving the mountian tracks that chriscross Italy France and Switerland.
Last year we did a total of 2/3000 miles allround!!!
We carry everything on board such as spares (ITALY IS VERY EXPENSIVE AND CLOSES IN AUGUST!!!)
We buy food in the villages or supermarkets when we come down the mountain for fuel and cigs!! (although we carry jerry cans).
Our tents are the OZ Tent 30second tent (see the Hannibull website) they really do take no time at all to put up
we use fridges and cookers but we also collect fire wood on route and snow!! (tobogging on plastic bags in July/August is a gas!!!) toilets are the nearest bush and showers are COLD mountain streams!!! although we do spoil ourselfs and book in to "proper" campsites once or twice for showers and the use of the camp laundry and maybe the odd resturant meal.
It is an amazing feeling just pulling over and setting up camp then waking up to stunning views every morning.
We get up to heights of around 8000 feet.
I have loads of pics and even dvd footage of last years trip (4th year ) when i transfere them to my photo host i will post some if you want?
This year we aim to go to Monte Carlo a sight to be seen ... my series, a 101, a lightweight, a Camel Trophy Disco, a 109, a German ex army 110 and a camo 110 (plus who ever we pick up along the way) driving down the main street! they wont know what has hit them!!!!!
As for your question of getting up the tracks well... its a case of 3 point turns on some of the bends and good clutch control!!!

Thanks Mandy. Sounds like a terrific trip someday. I guess I'm going to have to break down and buy that 40-ft. container...

Great shot, too.

At least the little red car is British (a Spitfire from the looks of it). Probably just hanging out with the big boys.
