Future 1991 Defender 110 200 TDI Owner

Hi everyone. I want to introduced myself to the group. I have been using the forums for a while for research and really appreciate all the effort and knowledge shared here! Thank you.

I have wanted to own a Defender for many years and over the last six months have been researching various options and I think I finally found the one. I am buying a right hand drive 1991 110 with a 200TDI with 85k miles on it. The truck spent it's life in Southern Europe and is rust free. I'm buying it from a reputable UK based shop who will be doing a modest rebuild and some upgrades but keeping original engine. Once complete I will import it using a US based Defender importer, shipped directly to California but titiled in another State. Then I will attempt to title in CA. I live in California and have done extensive research on the issue and believe I understand the pitfalls. If I can't title in CA I will keep it registered at my home in Nevada.

I have tons of questions and research to do so I will likely be posting some follow up questions in the appropriate forums. Again, thanks for all the help!

Welcome! I hear the process of registering a diesel in CA can be a nightmare. Hope it works out!

Here is a recent thread talking specifically about registering a Defender in California.

Hope you find a good one and have a lot of fun. This place is a great resource for what to do with them and how to keep them running. I already have 2 and my wife wants an early Series.

It sounds like people like photos here so here are a few. Anyone know what color this truck is?

By the way, I live in the San Francisco Bay Area portion of California. I hope to take delivery on my truck in June and would like to join some of the other bay area defender owners to do some off roading. I am still learning and working on what I want to include but I believe this truck is going to receive the following upgrades. I am looking to create a modernized yet classically styled Defender. I will keep the two-tone white roof with a classic color. I will also keep the white Steelies - new paint. Unsure of color. Considering Arles Blue, Keswick Green, Mid Grey, willow green. Big range here so need to hone in. Open to ideas on classic colors. - skid plate and front A-bar - re-covered seats in vinyl of leather. Possibly do fold up front facing cargo area seats - larger tires - Add NAS read step - refurbish the engine and suspension as needed - window tint - new headliner and carpet - new LED lights Definitely open to ideas and comments here but will likely start a new post

It's a great 110 for your build.

Hi everyone. I have learned a lot over the last 6 to 12 months regarding defenders. However, my technical knowledge of engines, transmission, drivetrain is very very weak. I am a fairly handy guy but have never worked on cars. I want ask the community what resources they recommend for learning about 200 TDI engines and the other mechanical components of Defenders. Books, classes or just hands on learning. Thanks

Grab some manuals and wrenches and go at it. Read and Google, others have had the same issue before. Order an extra part if hard to get or coming from overseas. If you mess up the first one then you have a spare and don't wait weeks to get a replacement.

Looks like a clean truck. I am in the process of importing a 1990 Santana that looks a lot like a defender. I too will be going through the hassles of trying to register it in CA. From my research, it is a crap shoot. Some register it with no problems and others have nightmares. Keep us posted. I probably won't see mine until late summer.

What port are you bringing it too? Sounds like you are registering it in NV first. I might try to register it in FL first and then bring the title to CA rather than trying to title a fresh import in CA. I am also hoping the manufacturer Santana won't raise as many flags.

Forgot to mention, I am part of the NorCal Land Rover club. We have get togethers every month for trail runs and camping excursions. In fact, we are headed to Bowman Lake in the Sierras this weekend. Annual trips include other Sierra trips, Death Valley, Lost Coast, Shaver Lake winter run, Pismo Beach and we went to Baja, MX in April. Great group of people who all have the rover-bug. There are a few defenders in the club and a few Camel Trophy trucks. Once your truck is stateside, you can come out for some fun.

I have a 2001 Range Rover built up, a 2006 LR3 and am importing the Santana.

Thanks Spike! Fired up to get my 110 and get it out for some adventures. I checked out the Norcal club website and impressed by the number of events. I wonder how that drive down to Baja was in a Defender.

I'm having a friend import and title the car on the East Coast and then I will title it in CA. From what I've read, not advisable to try and title direct to CA
