Defender newbie in DC

Hi all!

I really need advice and opinion from a long time defender ethusiastics. I am 39 yrs old and had various trucks and SUVs for the past 20 years. Wrangler YJ , Tacoma sports, Lexus LX 470, Lexus GX 560, Audi Q7, Cayenne GTS etc. Now, I am finally about to pull the trigger to get my own Defender ( My dream truck )

I finally found something I might be happy with after a very long internet research.

I think the price is pretty reasonable ( I might be wrong ). $39K

1995 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 90 4WD BASE / 120000 miles ** 3.9L V8 ** 5 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION ** CLEAN CARFAX ** AS-IS VEHICLE ** VERY RARE VEHICLE ** AM / FM / CASSETTE ** TOWING PACKAGE ** RUNNING BOARDS ** HELLA 3000 FOG LIGHTS ** GRILLE GUARD ** STEEL WHEELS

What do you think?

Ethan

Looks underpriced especially for a dealer listing...

Nice. No info/pics of the underside or engine bay though. The rest looks extremely clean. If the whole truck is as clean as the inside, its WAY underpriced.

if the carfax, frame and firewall are as clean as the rest appears you should be calling them right now before the flippers get ahold of it.

Have you seen it and driven it? If it has been recently repainted you should proceed with caution. That price is a fair warning in itself.

Lots of time in MD so inspect chassis for hidden rust. Also, it may have done some time in Europe (noting the FPO, AE) address on the Carfax.

Ethan,

This is literally a 15 minute drive for you on Columbia Pike...the truck just sits on the lot, so the best we can recommend is to take a look yourself.

For some reason folks on here hate this truck, but I have no idea why. When pressed, no clear justification is given. I've heard vague references to it being in "poor shape" but I can't tell what they're talking about.

Several major things you really have to watch out for on these trucks is to make sure the VIN is clean, and that there is no rust. The big rust items are the bulkhead, door bottoms, and frame. Watch for aluminum corrosion in the tub, especially where it meets the seatbox and outriggers.. If there is significant rust on the bulkhead, budget in at least $3000 to fix or replace it, patches of the frame aren't too expensive, but frame replacement is expensive ($3000 in parts, $whoknows how much in labor.)

Given the age, the truck will probably need some mechanical work and most likely deferred maintenance. Can you afford to maintain a Defender?

If you aren't able to work on the truck yourself, you may be making a huge mistake. Unless you're rich and can afford to pay someone's salary to work on the truck for you, it may destroy you financially.

Its been there, and available, for longer than a D90 in our region should be. I was in Arlington, July 29th, hanging out with my brother and just happened to spot it. U-turned and went back to have a "in-front" look at it and was only kinda impressed-There's also been two price reductions, it wasn't offered at the current price when I was looking-low $50's and I "nope'd" it-for that amount.

Best not to post any perceived deals here. There is a good dozen active dealers/restorers/flippers or more who will swoop them up in minutes. Not counting the 100s of enthusiasts in the market as well.
Good luck with your search/quest!

Last time I checked on the price, it was at $48,000. This was a month ago. The price is dropping slowly as the dealer feels out the market.

Like Russ said, I can think of at least four people in a 15 mile radius that are ready to pounce on that particular truck once the price hits their "magic number".

Why go by and take a good look. If you like it make them a cash offer and tell them it stands for 24hrs. Put some pressure on the dude that slapped down the deposit.

Pretty solid advice, it's a win:win really. And you get a chance to see whats right/wrong on a truck too.

It was me. And the deposit was for my full offer. And it was made yesterday for the record. I have the video of it on the lift to vouch. Will share details when done either way.

I would just go to the NOVA Happy Hour and drink beer and check out some trucks in the process.
