The OM swap would make sense with Rob Davis's adapter, since they're made for the LT77 / Shorty R380.

The cheapest/fastest thing would be to source a second hand petrol or NAD engine.

200tdi is fine, but finding one isn't easy.

In retrospect, I guess I should have gone with that V8, but I wasn't planning on needing a new engine...

In reality, the cheapest/fastest thing would be to sell the bloody thing and move on to another project that is not rapidly resembling a black hole. And that's still on the table.

However, an awesome member of the forums has stepped up and offered to help me go get this now-oversized-lawnmower, so at least it will be in my general vicinity so I can unload all the boxes in its back and figure out, in person, what I want to do with it. Coincidentally, this gent also has a few take-off petrols and a 200tdi laying about.

Sucks. Real sorry to hear that. If you can source a powerplant, I bet like Jeff said you could easily swap motors in a weekend with some help.

200tdi or OM617 would be nice with the short R380 but I am sure you are sick of spending money. Maybe someone has a decent 2.5NA around - I would guess there would be a few from 200/300 swaps.

I'll be sure to let everyone know what I decide on doing, and what the schedule will be, though probably on a different thread.

And while I am not looking forward to basically paying the price of the transmission parts and install over again for the engine parts and install, I figure, at this point, I might as well put something in there I want, rather than something I might rip out again in five years.

Assuming this Rover lasts another five days in my possession.
