Year range for 4.6 swap

I was wondering if I am considering a 4.6 engine swap, is there a year range I need to look at? I have a 95 d90 SW. I tried searching and found a lot of great information about all the things you would need, but didn't see anything about year limits.

Any is fine since you only reuse the block and maybe the heads.

Question

What about the ecu? Does it need to be re-mapped?

Cheers...

Remapping or rechipping will depend on whether you want to put in a performance cam and rechip for more power.

Question

So how much power will a 4.6L give over a 3.9L with the stock 3.9L ecu/chip?

Aren't you suppose to update the ECU chip when replacing the engine from 3.9 to 4.6?

The 3.9/4.0 has 182HP and the 4.6 has 222. So, about 40 HP is it's stock form.

A 4.2 chip works fine.

Glad to see this thread as I am seriously considering swapping in a 4.6 on the 110 project. I have a 4.0 and it was pretty good with 35's and 4.10's on a 90 but I fear it will not be enough as a 110. Would 40 extra horsepower be worth the money on a 110? What is the best way to hop up a 4.6 and how much can you really get out it?

Just need a bit of schooling on this.

Thanks

Tyler

Maybe I am missing something but why got with a 4.6? What's wrong with modifying a 3.9?

I've had Buick heads/intakes race ported for under $1000, pocket ported for much less. I'm not up to date with 3.9 cam pricing, but I'm guessing $500 max with lifters. If that doesn't give you 40hp, something went wrong.... So about $1500 for the top end.

If your bottom end needs a rebuild then maybe it makes more sense, maybe not. To professionally freshen race motors locally its about $1500, if the hard parts are good.

So if your 3.9 is in decent shape I would guess 3k to freshen it up and add at least 40hp.

Is a 4.6 long block cheaper?

re: Modifying a 3.9L

What about torque?
Wouldn't those mods just give you more power on the upper end? But maybe he wants a highway cruiser - I don't know.

I would be interested to know if anyone has done this and what parts they used. My 3.9 is in pretty good shape but I just want a little more umph on the road. I am not looking for a race car, but climbing hills on the highway without down-shifting would be nice. I will try searching around for 3.9 and cam to see what I can find.

I had also considered a gear change, but again not sure if that would be a way to go. I think I read in one of the many searches that it could help.

thanks guys,
Bill
