Xfer case Fail

So this is bad, right?

Anyone have a rear output housing for an early LT230 that has the speedometer drive?

A speedo is over-rated.

I can dig one up for you if you have no luck elsewhere.

It's a much having to try to retrofit the cable for the parking brake assembly as it is the speedo/odometer. I'll give you a call if I can't find another one. Thanks!

Anyone know off hand what trucks came with transfer cases with the speedometer drive?

I do not think Rob will part with that piece. He needs them s much as I do. The later DII Lt230's had the housing with no speedo drive. They used ABS for the speedo. Good news is you have a very late midel case. Those cases were built with more heft then the earlier ones.

Get a big drill bit and go for it!

I agree on the disco drum brake and happen to have one for sale.

How is the hand rehab?

Whoops did not pay attention though you had a different problem. You can drill and tap the housing for the parking brake. The housing comes off the back with no bearing preload if you do not want to remove the transfer case. Just reseal it with right stuff.

I thought you had a late model case without speedo drive you were trying to sort.

Is it possible to modify the exisitng (d2) cover for the speedo drive? I do have the d2 parking brake and cable,I'm just not sure if I have all the pieces in the linkage internal to the brake. Was hoping to just use the existing one, but if I can get that on to the box with the speedo drive, I might be in business. End of the day I'd prefer to not have to eff with this anymore as it'll be another 2 weeks until I can turn a wrench again.

Hand is much better, thanks. Still building strength back up, recovery has taken longer than I was hoping it would.

count my Xfer case in the dead column. I can go into low (that is how I got home), but normal the truck just sits a revs. The interesting thing is that the speedo moves too (when it just spins). Does that mean anything?

When it's sitting and revving with the speedo turning, is the rear driveshaft turning? If so, start looking for the problem in the rear axles or rear diff.

Tony,
Call me tomorrow at 505-872-7818. I'm sure I have a housing. I'm concerned about why it broke. Not all the rear outputs are the same. They all look pretty much the same, but the raised area that seats against the bearing is different thickness, depending on what case it came from. The cases that used gaskets are thicker there. If you start mixing and matching parts without this knowledge, you can mess up the bearing preload and possibly have a breakage such as you did. When you call me, can you give me the serial numbers off of both old & new boxes? That way we can come up with a good combination of parts & gaskets.

You broke a half shaft or blew the rear diff. Betting its the short side halfshaft. A lot quicker and easier to repair.

You should have been able to drive the truck in high range diff lock.

It was the Rear Diff. the whole thing needs to be replaced. The question is, why is the Atlantic British rear diff only $1000 but all the other ones are $3-4K? Is there something I am missing?
