Why are some snap rails longer??

My Snap Rails are pretty beat up so I'm in the market for a new pair. I had an extra single rail stored in my garage and I just discovered that that rail is LONGER than the rails currently on my 95. Did sizes vary by year?? Factory Defect?? Or maybe for a different model (ROW)??

Please Help.

The shorter one is on my 95. SO, apparently the 97 has a slightly longer rail. Learning something new every day. I'm happy to know that I wasn't the only one that didn't know this

I would think that the length of these would be consistent as it affects how well you door fits and the tightness of your canvas top.

Hmmm. Well, I can positively say that the longer rail was too long to even install. I'm hoping to see some measurements from other owners of 94-95's. I recall seeing a thread from a person who's snaps didn't line up with his rod. Now I think I know why.
More measurements please! This could be very important for those searching for these rails.

Also, I believe the rail actually fits into the roll cage and then attaches to the windshield.

Join the club. I just measured a set of unused snap rails (still in the package) that AB included when I replaced my original fastback years ago. They're also 29.5" so I guess they never would have fit on my '95 anyway.

1995 vs 1997 should not make any difference as they were the same cages. 1994 cages were slightly different, but each piece should still be able to fit the other years without issue.

Aftermarket vs. Genuine likely makes all the difference. These were probably some britpart rails that were intended to fit but never did. There were also some issues with people buying surrey tops for cheap on eBay a few years ago who then realized the snaps on them did not line up with the stock 5 snap rails.

I think The surreys on eBay that had issues had Besttop branding on them, and they may have had a couple of years where they were making both faulty snap rails and surreys. The old thread would need to be found though - I believe it was mlorman who had bought the cheap ones.

Ok, I see! So a company put different rails in the Market. But the question still stands. Is 29.5 the imposter? I have 28.5's on my 95 Defender with an OEM surrey perfectly snapped on. I agree that the rail should/would be one standard size and make, to fit all. If anything, the 95 & 97 would be the same.
I need to buy a pair and I want to know what to avoid. Still hoping to get some measurements from fellow owners to help clear this up!

My car is in its underground garage (the Bat Cave) up the street, but unless someone comes up with an answer beforehand, I will check this evening and see how the rails on the car compare with the 29.5" ones I'm not using. I agree that it shouldn't make any difference unless there was something weird about my soft top model. Come to think of it, it's a Defender...

OK, my car has the 29.5" rails. I don't know why yours are shorter--my guess is that Land Rover made several different lengths to account for their legendary random approach to measurement accuracy.

Someone please post side-by-side pics of these rails already so that we can see the difference(s) (if any) in snap location(s), etc.
