White steelies with ? tire size

Searched but could not find an exact answer. I have 2" OME on the 90, and have recently ordered steel wheels from AB. I want to paint them white when they arrive. AB recommended 235/85-16's. I have 285/75-16's on the alloys now. Will the tires AB recommended look right, or will they be too small? I am no tire expert. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It really depends on what you want to do. Narrower will give you better mpg and will wonder less on dirt roads at high speed. Wider will generally provide better traction under more difficult terrain. the taller you go the better the clearence but the trade off is higher center of gravity.

235/85 will look a bit on the small size... go with 255/85 or just stick with the 275/85 you are running. IMO 255/85 is a great all around size for a 90.

So, you are suggesting 255/85-16's? I would like to see a pic of these on a 90 if someone has them.

Just had a thread about these tires here:
http://www.defendersource.com/forum/...ead.php?t=4714

I run them on my alloys, I personally feel their a little too narrow for my tastes, but that's probably due more to the offset of the alloy wheel than the tire itself. I like the 285/75 on the 16 inch wheel, I think that'll look great on the steelies you're getting. How wide are they? That's an awefully small tire for for AB to recommend, I wonder if it's a narrow rim.

Follow-up Post:

For comparison, the 255/85 is just over 33" inches tall, and about 10" wide. The 285/75 16 is just under 33" tall and just over 11" wide.

I went with the 255/85R16's. I will post some pics when they get back from paint and mount/balance.
I hope they look right with the NATO rims.

Follow-up Post:

Does anyone know if I will ned to get hub caps (not really hubcaps, these are much smaller) when I put these on? I didn't even know they existed until I saw them under the Defender parts page on the Rovers Down South website.

I think those 'hub caps' are like dust caps, and all the trucks came with them. You should be fine.
