Where do you buy electronics?

I've had it, again, with Radio Shack. Where do you folks buy your electronics (wire, connectors, resistors, LEDs, etc.) Obviously I'm looking for online resources unless you live in this part of GA.

Yesterday I needed a small two prong connector and had to describe to the Radio Shack guy what a connector did. Eventually after stressing that I needed a "small" connector he handed me the male part of a connector the size of a matchbook. Which was way too large anyway but to make matters worse the femal part was out of stock. Of course I really wanted a waterproof quick disconnect but felt the concept was much to complicated for his level of understanding.

I realize that there are good specialist resources for LEDs, some of which I have used, but one stop shopping has benefits.

Thanks John

We have an electrician at work so I ask him and he gets me stuff from a company called Hagemeyer. I'm sure they have a distributor in GA and you could get it there. Up side = OEM prices and people who are electricians working there to answer questions. You may actually be able to order online too, never checked

For connectors go to the auto parts store or West Marine, they have water proof stuff. You can order from West Marine online. They don't have resistors but they do have wire and connectors type stuff.

I found some Deutsch connectors from a guy on ebay. Only needed splash resistance and not true waterproof. I had forgotten about West Marine. Thanks for the info from both of you. I'll keep checking back to see what else comes up. I'll check that first company mentioned tomorrow.

Mouser and digikey both have a catalog which you should order, I believe it's free. They're like 900 pages a piece and if they don't have it in there, it doesn't exist.

I haven't used the Shack [except in emergencies] after I found these places.

I use Allied Electronics or Newark Electronics mostly for work but also whenever I might need something for the Rover.

I'll second that! West Marine has some quality items. Well, compared to most automotive electrical connections/wire.

I would guess 90+% of electronic products get started as a prototype built by engineers with parts ordered from www.digikey.com and/or www.mouser.com. If it's electronic parts you're looking for, in "small" quantities (1 to 100K), those are the places to get them.
