When did the R380 start to show up in '94?

Can someone tell me... in '94, approximately what # Defender the R380 made its appearance? I am shopping, and many ads show the rear number plaque, but dont specify the tranny or show a picture of the shifter. I am tired of sending folks emails asking "where is reverse?"....

If I find a '94, I'd like to have the later transmission, if possible.

Thanks

I think you'd want build date more-so than plaque numbering, as the numbering didn't necessarily mean the order in which it was produced.

Somewhere in the 1466 to 1700 range. I would say 80% of 1994s have had their LT77s replaced with R380s.

Thanks guys...2001! Too funny... Actually, MOST of the early 94's I've looked at still have the LT77's. My old '94 had the LT, and I decided I want to stay away from that one.

Thanks again!

BTW, I never realized the plaque number didnt really correspond to build date....

Disclaimer: Rover novice...what is the difference in shift pattern between the LT77 and R380? In my '94 reverse is up to the left (next to 1st)

I may not be 100% right on that one. There was a discussion some time back regarding 300/300 1997 LE up for sale and if it really meant that it was the last one off the line or not.

I think range-wise you can depend on the plaque numbering to be somewhat accurate with regard to build date (and therefore build order), as they weren't just slapped on in a completely random order.

You have a LT77.

The R380s are down and to the right below 5th.

Thought so and thanks for the clarification. Changed the fluids for some Redline MTL and shifting is great so no complaints from me despite the reputation

A smooth shifting LT77 has to be better than a crunching grinding R380 ...
