What year is my Defender 110?

I've tried about 3 different resources to correctly identify my D110 to no avail.

All 3 give me 3 different results, so I am seeking the forum's help. FYI, the current US title identifies it as a 1986, but I'm not so sure anymore.

Here goes: SALLDHMV7BA263XXX

Thanks for the help.

What did British motor heritage at Gaydon in England say?

I did not contact them. I tried 2 different VIN decoders on the internet, and a factory LR parts manual. What I come up with is 1985, 1986 (currently titled as such in the US) and 1987 from the LR parts resource!!

It is a RHD, 5-speed manual, V8 3.5L carburator model.

The "B" between the 7 and the A indicates year. The decode is 85-87my. The actual serial number where you put xxx is what will give the date. Email Gaydon and for 6quid they will give you the build date in an email.

I have a 110 with "A" as the 10th digit of the vin but it's titled as an 86. I'm guessing it was manufactured in late 84 but not registered till 86 in the UK. Whatever the case, when it found its way to Ohio the DMV there determined it to be an 86 model from the then owners documents. I think most DMVs here are a little bewildered by a V5 document.

Safe to assume then that:
A = 1985
B = 1986
C = 1987

Yes?

Nope.

Decode a land rover vin using Calvin. If you don't know what that is try using google to find it.

Already tried countless times at countless websites. Only gives a range of dates '85 to '87, and therein lies the problem.

Bewildered ? A V5 document doesn't have any information about when a vehicle was built. It only lists a date of first registration, ie when Nigel and his bride drove it off the dealership lot. Most owners here could care less what year is on their title. My son's truck was obviously an 83 but was first registered in 85. We didn't care, but did go back and get a build date letter for his folio of records.

These were very low production number vehicles with only about 7000-10,000 a year being built and breaks between model years were very fuzzy because annual model year changes common with most makes just didn't happen with the hand built defender like it did with the range rover etc. Rover didn't care much about VIN sequencing or even how many digits were in all the other manufacturers VIN's ie the recognized standard format @ the time, so it is what it is. Rover didn't change their VIN formats to conform with everyone else until they decided to sell the Range Rover into the US in 87 and were forced to. As advised above the only online resource to get an exact build date is the British Motor Heritage Museum @ Gaydon. For 6 pounds they will email you your exact build date usually the same business day. You can ask Land Rover for a letter but it has to be done in writing, takes a month and is considerably more expensive and comes by mail.

Thank you Douglas. I took your advice yesterday and already sent the inquiry to Gaydon. Can I PM you regarding this? My issue goes beyond just dating my D110.
