What motor is better? 1989 3.5L V8 or 2.5L Turbo?

Looking at some defenders here in Greece.

What is a more valuable motor (for resale in the USA)
The 1989 2.5L Turbo (Diesel) or the 3.5L V8 Petrol ?

The Defenders are under 60,000miles.

The turbo diesels have a horrendous reputation, based on my reading and no real world experience. I would prefer a 2.5NA over a TD any day. Late 1990 will be fitted with the 200tdi. Much more desirable and now ready for import. The 3.5, meh...

The TD I drove was not bad I didn't think. They have a bad rep though. The 3.5's I've driven are not bad either, especially with 4 speed trans, but they too are not loved in the general community. The engines that seem to get the love and respect are the 300's and maybe TD5's. The 300's I've driven were really nice but loud on major roadways and they require lots of shifting around town.

With a different cam, the 3.5 can be OK. It's sorta detuned from its potential.

They both suck & would be much better with newer engines. If you want to go Tdi, get the diesel. If you want to go 3.9/4.0/4.2/Ford 5.0/LS, get the V8.

Thanks for the reply guys!
Sadly the fact here is I can only choose from the 3.5L V8 or the 2.5L Turbo as those were the motors in 1989 over here and I cannot import a Defender with a swapped motor, the 200Tdi is possible, but tough to find as it's a model year 1991 but produced in November of 1990. Obviously I would love the bullet proof Tdi200, or reliable 300Tdi or smooth and tuneable TD5, I have had them all.. Not the 3.5L v8 and 2.5L though. I can change parts like the cam etc though.

The 3.5 with the Edlebrock intake/carb/cam is not that bad as said above, from both a performance and reliability perspective. Conversely, the 2.5 TD lacks both. The NAD lacks performance but is at least reliable. With that said, I prefer the 3.5 given the choices available- and with the proper combo of tire size/Tcase ratio, it is quite versatile.

Good luck with that! 2 years later still not able to get a D90 out of greece and Im Greek with family living there. If you hadn't noticed the place is a mess and I can promise you your export paperwork is not on the top of anyones list anytime soon.
