Ive had this car for 15 years and I've never figured out what it is. Does anyone know?

Instruments, instruments!

It's the dimmers/2-position setting for your instrument backlight. Of which the settings are "dim" and "barely visible" in my opinion.

For what it's worth, many times the white "connector" pops off the back...which essentially defaults it to the "barely visible" setting. Pop the switch out and take a look at it...and plug it back in if need be. I plan to change mine over to Carling one of these days anyhow.

This problem has been SOLVED permanently !

The "R" interior light icon is my new gauge dimmer...essentially it's just a Carling On-Off switch. You pipe the one end of the factory harness into "Power In" and the other end into "Power Out" (the Power In/Out pins on the Carling diagram that is). When you flick the stalk it sends power to the switch automatically, in the "off" position it's the "dim" setting, and in the "on" position it's the "bright" setting. Now that I've switched to LEDs on the dash gauges it's actually an effective dim setting on the dash lights.

I am beginning to view replacing the crappy LR switches with Carlings the vehicle version of breaking up with the girl that you knew the relationship should have ended LONG ago.
