What is the Inertia Switch for?

While looking for the brown module to reset the service engine light I came across an inertia switch mounted behind the fuse box. Does anyone know what it is for? On a different note, in a '94 the reset module is located behind the instrument cluster, not behind the fuse block as the FAQ suggested.

Thanks.

It **should** cut off the flow of fuel in the event of an accident. (safety feature)

Melissa hit the nail on the head, When your rover gets bumped it shuts off the gas. If you bang your dash hard enough it will pop, and you can reset it by simply pushing the button back in. And yep the reset module is behind the dash on 94's.

I assume it should be fairly close to the location as it was in my 99 D1 which was on the left side of the rear firewall in the engine bay. That damn thing used to trip on me all the time.
