Mike Sandone from North America Overland in Monroe CT has begun installing a P&P external roll cage on my 90. I've waited a long time to have this done for safety purposes. Project was put on hold for a year as I had to attend to other work needed on my defender. If you want to check out the progress, Mike said he would be posting pictures of the install on his Facebook page. Last Saturday I drove there from Long Island in blizzard conditions and 19 degrees temps. I'm glad I had the half cab on instead of the soft top on this trip! Would of been more pleasant if I did the drive this weekend in 50-60 degree temps! Hopefully Mike will be able to do the install without any issues. I'm sure the defender is in very capable hands. :-)

Cage is a full external cage. I decided to go this route so it would be compatible with a variety of different top configurations I have for the Blue Turtle. Also adds a bit of extra side protection in tight areas on the trails.

That was fast. Are you going to run a canvas soft top under it as well? Looks a little like Couga's truck before he redid it.

Couga and I laughed about they could be twins.
For the time being I'm going with the half cab. It is so much quieter and warmer than the full soft top. I may buy a bikini top to run with the tonneau I had made for the half cab setup when it is really hot. The swap probably will take 2-3 hours drinking a few beers along the way ;-). The full soft top is worthless in the winter. Not like a Badger. More like an umbrella in my opinion. Summer I'd rather have no top at all so bikini might be the ticket.

That's a half cab hard top and a custom tonneau top I had made locally. Scroll up a few pages and you will see closer pictures of that. The boat canvas shop cranked it out in a few days.

Removed the LT230 transfer case.

Found my LT230 has 1.22 ratio, cross-drilled input gear, and also a special oiling plate installed.

Also, not many miles on the gearbox itself since its rebuild. It shows on the input shaft, which looks almost brand new.

Almost done removing the LT77.

Lt77 out. It weighs a good 90 plus lbs...dad helped me bring it upstairs to the apt....now to crack the case and figure out what happened.

Btw the shaft coming from the engine is wiggly....noticeably...is that normal? The output shaft is perfect with no play.

No, not normal. Input bearing might be shot. Also replace or at least measure the pilot bushing.

Extra points for rebuilding it in your apartment! Oh, to be a bachelor again.

We had a heat wave today it was in the 30's so I got the suspension done.

It was a tight fit backing her into the garage.



One side done. The fit was looking a little to tight for my liking. I had my wife come out before I moved it around to get to the other side to watch and make sure I didn't rip the garage door down.



And both sides done.



It raised the rear end about 2" that wouldn't be surprising except I put on stock springs..

Then I moved on to the leaking seal on the fuel level sender.



Then I washed it cleaned the garage up a bit and called it a night.
