Weird burning smell in 5th gear?

While driving 65+ on the freeway in 5th gear, there is a speradic burning smell. It is only while I am in 5th gear, and I have not noticed any patterns of any sort. It doesn`t smell like burning oil or plastic.... I can`t really tell what it smells like. Maybe some sort of burning rubber? I have no clue, and I can`t locate it because it only happens while I`m on the freeway and going 65-70 miles an hour. Anyone else ever experienced this with their trucks? Anyone have any clue what it could be?

Mine will smell like that when I need to downshift, like it's running real rich. I figured it was the exhaust coming back in the ST

I had already checked for wires blowing up against the exhaust, and I did in fact have a couple, so I took care of that, but the smell continued... I guess i`ll try the axle breathers now... Thanks for the suggestion

Humm, clutch slip? The resistance of the drive line is greatest in highest gear -- when you gas it going uphll in 5th, maybe the clutch is slipping?

I had my ignition coil go recently and it smelled like burning plastic/rubber.
(only thing not mentioned that I can think of).
Could be oil gear or engine splattering on the manifold or exhaust.
Could also be oil from axel getting on hot brake rotor (through seals) look to see if one of your brakes is real goopy looking.
Could be clutch (is it slipping at all)?
Also check the parking brake cable, which likes to touch the exhaust on my rig.
Hope this helps.
