Washing Machine Sound

Why does my engine sound like a washing machine on cold wet mornings?

I'm thinking it is just the sound of the fan. When it gets real cold out the viscous couplings in engine driven fans usually tighten up and run the fan for a few minutes at first. It used to happen in my blazer, and it happens in the LR3's too.

I would hate to think it is the harmonic balance (crank pully) wobbling around a bit. or.....could be a bearing on one of the tensioners. silly question, but have you popped the hood to see where the sound is eminating from?

Popping the hood would be a good idea. Can this be something that is bad to drive with?

Depending on what is the cause, yes. Check the tension in all the belts. Also, check them for cracks. If they seem worn, replace them. Also, with a pair of stethoscopes, you can narrow in on the location of the "sound"

Good Luck!

Cheers...

I would have to problem doing it, it depends how handy you are (and if you've never done any belt on any "older" truck, then how prepared you are/how much you read about it).
Cheap? Well.... nothing seems cheap to me anymore, but <$70 seems in order for all of them(http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/9229.cfm).

Barry, Welcome to the world of auto mechanics 101. It is like owning a home you just have to get in there and play around. If you F it up badly then it is time to call a professional. if you follow the sames steps in reverse order when putting something back together when you tour apart then you are golden. In leiu of a stethescope you can you a piece of vacuum or heater tubing to check to isolate the noise. Put one end to your ear and the other you can probe around the engine bay.
Sooner you address the problem or find out what it is, the better and we are here to help. Some of us range from backyard mechanics (me I am going on 22 years under the hood of cars) to master technicians who's knowledge set are abyssal.
Just remember to open the hood when it happens and look and listen.
