Want to upgrade RADIO!!!

So I went to a local audio shop today to see if they could upgrade my radio to something better than the factory radio. The guy said he has been in the audio industry for 27 years and he has worked on 3 Defenders. He said that it is impossible to install an upgraded radio without "hammering" down the body of the vehicle under the existing radio. He said that there is not enough room to install the standard radios.

I see a lot of you guys have upgraded radios in your Defenders through photos on this forum. Is this guy just inexperienced with Defenders or does the vehicle require some modifications to install an upgraded radio.

Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated! The factory radio sucks ass!

X2.
Unless the radio in a '97 is WAY different than on the '95 (in the cubby box), there is plenty of space.

A BS Meter would have come in handy--he's either blowing smoke or ill-informed. I recently installed a standard-size JVC high definition FM radio from Crutchfield with room to spare.

97 has plenty of space for radio and a good size amp in the center console.

Is the '97 radio slot similar to the '95?

I think the 97 can have issues if the factory AMP wiring is cut. this has been discussed in the past, ECR posted something about it. Any aftermarket CD player will work, order from Crutchfield.

Have you personally done this with Roverville?

Let us know how it works out....

I had rovervile install the iPod jack. I hook up my iPhone and play music all the time. They even sent the adapter to hook up the I phone 4s. The sound is much better than the radio signal

Reason I asked is because I considered this option for my D2 but heard some not-so-good things about Roverville.

My experience with Roverville was poor at best. First he's ridiculously behind times and borderline nuts. He took my original radio and either switched it on purpose or confused it with an extra one he had laying around on the floor. The one that came back looked like shit. One year later the radio was not working like it should. Somedays it worked and some days it didnt. Roverville says something must have spilled in it. He used that same damn excuse once before. It must be his go to excuse. I'd never recommend them.
