I've never done it but there is a sticky at the top that extensively talks about getting a diesel registered in California. I've read through it and generally, I think the conclusion is your basically f'ed but you might get a nice DMV guy who just let's it go. Pretty sure the NY title doesn't mean anything as far as Cali is concerned.

Spoken to a dealer out there who told me that because it is a diesel, and it is original it would be very simple. Basically a vin check on the frame.

Have you read the California threads from actual users here?

A few, yet there seem to be a ton of registered diesels driving around CA. I know there are hoops but I wanted to see if anyone had some insight into how they got them registered.

I live here now and had a similar issue. My understanding was that you can't import anything made after 1975. So series land rovers and NAS Defenders are your only option. A series can be diesel or gas, it doesn't matter. An NAS has to be registered in CA before you do a swap to diesel. The only exception is students and military can legally drive vehicles registered in another state. That's what i'm doing. I know of at least one company that fixes defenders in LA (westcoastdefenders) and resells then for $100k+. They exclusively import v8's. I would give them a call as they import to Cali for a living. I talked to them once when I was looking for a 200tdi and they were very friendly. As I said this is what I have been told. I would love to be proven wrong on this matter as it's a hassle dealing with the dmv from across the country.
