VIN Help

Red flag, I know. Hoping there's an answer out there to it though.

I'm looking at a 110 that was imported to NY in '98. It's been registered in the US for 16 years, ranging from NC to NY to MI. Has a title that reads "1998 LAND ROVER". No model. No VINs on the vehicle but there is a sticker on the frame that reads:

Attachment 97749

Any thoughts besides "run"?

Unless the vehicle has had a new chassis fitted the VIN number should be stamped on the front leg (just above the dumb iron). Failing that there ought to be a plate rivetted to the master cylinder.
If there is no VIN number anywhere on the vehicle then your only option if the vendor can't provide full paper historyis to walk away from it.
Think about it, why would you pay a lot of money for a vehicle with an unprovable history? Just the voice of reason.

Was it actually imported or built by its owner from parts? That looks like a NY issued VIN when they inspect a car as a kit.

That's the story I'm told. Was assembled. No VINs on the vehicle though. Anywhere.

Obviously there are receipts for all the donor parts that were used to assemble the truck ... ?

No receipts. Not from a shady seller either but rather a dealership.

You have to show those to get the VIN from the state. They care about sales tax.

Once its tagged by MVD I'm sure there isn't any further record keeping requirement. With that said NY MVD may have a copy of the original builders receipts.

All I know about the truck is that it's original owner was the president of Abercrombie and Fitch. He purchased it in 98 and titled it as a kit car. The truck has a new frame, 200TDi engine and no VIN numbers. She's got all the right parts but I'm obviously concerned about titling it. That said, it has been titled in NC, NY and MI over the last 16 years. It's currently title in MI. The MI title reads "1998 LAND ROVER" with no model. Frame has a sticker on it that reads "STATE OF NEW YORK 107757" and the title has the VIN number listed as "NY69075".

Link for the truck is here:

That's super awesome of you but I wouldn't ask my worst enemy to wait in a DMV line...

I personally wouldn't have any issues buying that truck if it inspected good.

Not shady, yet they list it as a 1985.
IMO, the discounted price represents the potential issues in store for the next owner. Caveat emptor.

Even if you manage to title it ... What's your insurance company gonna say?

Give them the VIN and ask. It will be in their system if it has a NY issued
VIN.

It's been insured before and can be again.
If I bought it think I would try to initially title it where it is currently "domiciled" then with that title in hand, register it where you are located.

He did it to attract attention to the ad is my guess. I know the guy personally and have purchased from him in the past. I think that was more of a marketing ploy to draw people into the ad.

Progressive has already insured it for me. I called several days ago.

It's currently insured by State Farm. Also, the truck is located about 2 miles away from where I live.

What would a fair price be for this truck, in your opinion, if it had a proper title and registration? Mechanically she is near perfect. Just underwent a $26k mechanical restoration.

Less than $26k for sure. Late teens early 20's. Consider the challenge you'll have convincing someone to buy it ...
